Hollow Knight: Silksong fans are speculating on possibilities of what a third game in the celebrated Metroidvania series might look like, including possible presentation chages or even a potential shift in genre. With the release of Hollow Knight: Silksong in early September, fans have now been treated to two action-adventure games with two very different protagonists, and their distinct subtleties of difference in tone are leading to some interesting theories.

A new Hollow Knight: Silksong mod can make the game even harder

Developed and produced by Team Cherry, the series thus far follows an insect-like humanoid race through deeply woven tales centered around their respective kingdoms as they battle catastrophes like supernatural plagues and spreading madness. The first game proved itself to be a breakout hit, so much so that Hollow Knight: Silksong' s release crashed several online storefronts on its launch date due to server overload. In fact, multiple independent game developers moved the launch dates for their games to avoid competing with Silksong for players' attention.

Hollow Knight Fans Have Ideas for a Third Game

With that release now nearly two months in the past, many dedicated players have worked their way through Silksong's story despite it being purposefully designed to be much more difficult than the original Hollow Knight, and they're theorizing about what could be in store if Team Cherry produces a third game in the series. Specifically, following the themes of descending into the ruined kingdom of Hallownest in the first game and ascending to the peak of Pharloom in Silksong, fans on Reddit are trying to answer the question of where the series could possibly go next while still maintaining that theme.

Theories for Hollow Knight 3

There appear to be two dominant theories presented in the thread, both of which would provide a thematic midpoint between ascension and descent. The one getting the most attention, both positive and negative, is for Team Cherry to introduce a third dimension to the traditional 2D series. While possibly said in jest, this theory has also elicited several negative responses, even when suggested, as fans of the series appreciate their exploration of Hollow Knight: Silksong's 2D map. However, if done right, it could be interesting.

The other prevalent theory suggests that the midway point between ascending and descending could be expansion, which quickly evolved into a discussion about the possibility of a game that plays like Civilization set in the Hollow Knight universe. While a genre shift into 4X strategy is arguably a much bigger departure from the tried-and-tested formula than a switch to 3D, it also seems like something several fans would be interested in, potentially as a way of explaining the rise of the Pale King. Of course, expanding in a traditional sense—instead of up to down (or vice versa), going from left to right—would be a little harder to add much originality to.

Of course, given how long Hollow Knight: Silksong was in development, fans can rest assured a new game is several years away if it manifests at all.
