Hollow Knight: Silksong doesn’t take long to get going. Hornet will be armed with her trusty Needle and fight off evil bugs on her way to the first sanctuary in Bone Bottom. Upon meeting new NPCs, Hornet can begin trading and take on side quests, similar to quest types found in a typical RPG.

Side quests in Hollow Knight: Silksong are called Wishes, and when a quest is complete, the game will cheerily say, “Wish Granted.” It’s a cute way for the game to differentiate itself from other quest systems. So, for the early game, here are some Wishes to keep track of in Hollow Knight: Silksong. There are also some uncategorized quests to keep track of.

Berry Picking

Making A Witch’s Brew

  • Starting Location: Bone Bottom
  • Reward: Druid’s Eye

Berry Picking is a Wish that can be started north of the town in Bone Bottom via the NPC Moss Druid. Moss Druid needs three Mossberries to finish a brew, and there are more than three Mossberries in Hollow Knight: Silksong out there. Some are clinging to enemies, which are easy to deduce as they are glowing green, while others are in hard-to-reach places.

Once players return, Moss Druid will give players the Druid’s Eye, which is a Trinket that can restore some of Hornet’s Silk upon getting hit. Returning to Moss Druid later with extra Mossberries will net players Rosaries, Hollow Knight: Silksong’s main currency.

The Lost Fleas

Fleas Never Looked So Fuzzy

  • Starting Location: The Marrow
  • Reward: Flea Brew

A more involved early Wish is called The Lost Fleas, which can be started in the mid-section of The Marrow. Here, players will find a band of travelers led by Mooshka, who has lost fleas. Most biomes within the early areas of Hollow Knight: Silksong have at least one flea hidden away, including The Marrow, Hunter’s March, Deep Docks, Far Fields, and Greymoor.

Once five are collected, Mooshka will offer Hornet to travel with them, which can unlock a resting point outside of Haunted Bellhart. Also, another bug within the group, Grishkin, will give players the more important Flea Brew Trinket as a reward. This can increase Hornet’s movement and attack speed temporarily.

Freeing Grindle

A Soulslike Predicament

  • Starting Location: The Marrow
  • Reward: Straight Pin

Hollow Knight: Silksong, akin to its predecessor, borrows from the Soulslike genre by losing materials upon death. Another Soulslike trait can be likened to mysterious NPCs that players don’t know whether they can trust. Within The Marrow, players will stumble upon a prison in Hollow Knight: Silksong and find Grindle.

Players can break down his cell with a few attacks, or they can let him be. No matter the decision, Grindle will be let out eventually. Within his cell, in both scenarios, players can get the Straight Pin Tool, which is essentially a set of throwing knives. This quest is an unmarked example.

Volatile Flintbeetles

Bug Hunter Wilds

  • Starting Location: Bone Bottom
  • Reward: Memory Locket

Volatile Flintbeetles is a Wish that will unlock in Bone Bottom’s quest board once players progress far enough. Hollow Knight: Silksong's quest giver needs players to track down Flintbeetles, which players can find by tracing scraps left behind.

The Marrow is the closest location to Bone Bottom, and it will turn the game into a Monster Hunter-like adventure. Players need to track and defeat three Flintbeetles and get their Flintgems. Once complete, players will get a Memory Locket, which can unlock nodes in Crests to equip more Tools or Trinkets.

Bugs Of Pharloom

Building A Database

  • Starting Location: Halfway Home (Greymoor)

Bugs of Pharloom is one of the longest Wishes in Hollow Knight: Silksong. It can be started in Greymoor, specifically in the Halfway Home resting spot, wherein players can find an odd, almost alien-like NPC named Nuu. Once the Wish is taken on, players will get a bestiary of the enemies they have faced, including bosses.

Nuu wants to build a database sort of like the Pokemon franchise’s Pokedex. So, while the effects of the Wish will take the entire game to complete, players should make sure and kill every enemy type a few times as they go along.

Finding Simple Keys

Unlock Alternate Routes

Like Grindle, Simple Keys belong to an unmarked type of quest in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Simple Keys are rare items that players can find or purchase, which will unlock alternate routes. For example, Pebb in Bone Bottom will sell players one for 500 Rosaries, which is a lot, but worth it.

What to Do First in Silksong

At the start of the game, prioritize these things to do first in Silksong to meet important NPCs and unlock useful items and abilities.

One of these secret doors can be found in Deep Docks, which will unlock a harder side of the biome. These Simple Key areas aren’t necessary to navigate, but they will have some good loot waiting if players are up for the challenge. Players should always buy Simple Keys if they show up in stores, and they should also take notes of locked doors whenever stumbled upon.

Finding Mask Shards

And Other Secrets

Beyond Simple Keys and locked doors, Hollow Knight: Silksong has a lot of side activities. Like most Metroidvanias, exploring is key to unlocking some of the best loot. Players can find Mask Shards, for example, which will increase Hornet’s health when four are found. Shops can have rare items like Mask Shards, too.

They should keep in mind that there are false walls all over the place, and attacking them will make it obvious if there is a hidden passage behind. Players can also find rare Tools, Trinkets, optional bosses, and more if they explore. So, while these are unmarked in Hollow Knight: Silksong, players should keep a record as they explore via notes on their phone or screenshots, and create quest markers of their own.
