Six years in, the wait for Hollow Knight: Silksong is still going. The second metroidvania from Australian indie developer Team Cherry has had a couple of trailers since its reveal in February 2019, but news has run dry for a while. Hollow Knight: Silksong was last seen on the April 2025 Nintendo Switch 2 Direct for a scant few seconds, proclaiming that 2025 would be the year it finally released. This doesn't excuse the frustrations and false positives that plagued the Hollow Knight fanbase during Silksong’s absence, but at least there's a light at the end of the tunnel.
Hollow Knight’s success back when it was released in 2017 is the reason why said community has persisted after so long. The game demonstrated mastery over its gameplay, presentation, and storytelling that even AAA games struggle to match, and the hope is that Silksong will be able to keep its streak going. Starring Hornet, the first game’s rival, Hollow Knight: Silksong brings players to the new kingdom of Pharloom, and has already shown plenty of familiar action-platforming with novel mechanics to back it up. All signs point to Silksong’s triumphant return soon - potentially even at Summer Game Fest - but fans should keep their expectations in check.

Summer Game Fest Could Reveal Silksong's Release Date
A release date for Hollow Knight: Silksong could finally appear at the 2025 Summer Game Fest, which is kicking off with its traditional Geoff Keighley-hosted keynote on June 6. Considering Silksong’s appearance in the current, supposed release year at the last Nintendo Direct, this is the most believable show appearance for the game yet. Fans have been anticipating and joking about Hollow Knight: Silksong appearing at just about every major game industry event for the past few years, but now that ten seconds of new footage have been released alongside new artwork and screenshots, it feels like it's time.
Furthermore, Silksong’s launch appears to have gained a cut-off date. It was recently announced that Hollow Knight: Silksong would be playable in some form starting September 18 at Melbourne, Australia’s national museum of screen culture. The original Hollow Knight was part of a similar exhibit, but the circumstances around Silksong and its lack of a release date are extraordinary. Unless there's another delay, like what seemingly happened after Xbox declared Silksong would release within a year of its 2022 Games Showcase, Hollow Knight: Silksong should finally be ready to meet its expectant public.

It would be nice to leave it at that, but Hollow Knight: Silksong has proven to be anything but predictable. Not only does Silksong have a long history of ghosting promising events, there isn't a strong precedent for the game appearing at Keighley-led shows, either. With so many signs of its return, this could be the time that changes, but that line of thought has gone nowhere so many times that it's hard to trust an obvious endpoint. Nowadays, Hollow Knight: Silksong fans have every reason to keep up their guard.
June 2025 Could Still Be Silksong’s Time
The silver lining in this instance is that Silksong doesn't need to appear on June 6 to land in the Summer Game Fest season. After Xbox’s surprise Silksong trailer, some people theorized that Xbox had a marketing deal with Team Cherry due to the promise that Silksong would come to Game Pass. Its appearance in a Nintendo Direct cast some doubt on this, but either way, a Sony State of Play and a Nintendo Direct are both rumored to be in June 2025 alongside SGF and Xbox’s confirmed events. There really is no telling when Hollow Knight: Silksong could appear next, but it's about to have plenty of chances to do so.
