Hollow Knight: Silksong is finally here, and I have to say, I am thoroughly enjoying it when I have the time to play it. If I'm not working or playing one of 2025's other major releases, I'm playing Hollow Knight: Silksong, and every minute spent with it is a joyride, albeit a painful one, at times. I'm actually amazed that it's finally here, considering it was announced with a trailer over 6 years ago and then faded behind the curtains until very recently. Many of us thought it might have been a really long April Fool's joke, but no, it was just Team Cherry having too much fun developing it — which is better news than a rough development cycle.
Now that Hollow Knight: Silksong is here, though, I've been thinking about other game sequels I've been waiting for that are taking a long time to come to fruition. Of course, there's The Elder Scrolls 6, the "elephant in the room," as Todd Howard put it 9 years ago, but I've decided it's better that I put that one out of my mind until we get more official news about it. There's another sequel, however, that I've waited over 13 years for — one that was announced 5 years ago via teaser trailer and has not had much news about it since. That sequel is none other than the next Mass Effect game.
Hollow Knight: Silksong Has Me Hopeful for the Next Mass Effect
The Next Mass Effect Was Teased 5 Years Ago
At this point, it has been 5 years since the next Mass Effect was teased and over 13 years since Mass Effect 3. Sure, we got Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2017, but what sets the next Mass Effect apart is that it looks to continue the legacy of the original trilogy, even though it likely won't include Commander Shepard. With Liara T'Soni as the face of the next Mass Effect game, that sets it up to pick up after the events of Mass Effect 3, not Andromeda. I don't know if it will be called Mass Effect 4, Mass Effect 5, or if it will be given reboot status with a simple Mass Effect title, but that's beside the point. The point is that I'll finally (hopefully) get the sequel I've been waiting over 13 years for, especially considering Mass Effect 3's good ending does leave things open for continuation.
I know the issue with continuing that story has always been the canonization of one ending over another, as doing so would trivialize the decisions of some players who chose different endings. But at this point, I really don't care. I want more Mass Effect (not more Andromeda), and considering Liara T'Soni is one of my favorite characters, seeing her headline the whole thing makes me even more excited about it. The only problem is that excitement has been put on hold for a long time, with the next Mass Effect game having now been in development for 5 years, but more specifically, in its pre-production stage.
After Hollow Knight: Silksong's Eventual Release, I'm Not Giving Up on Mass Effect
Mass Effect may still be in pre-production, but if there's anything I've learned now that Hollow Knight: Silksong is finally here, it's that I shouldn't give up on any game that hasn't been confirmed to be canceled yet. It took over 8 years after Hollow Knight for its own sequel to materialize, and it's actually only been the same amount of time now since Mass Effect Andromeda, so that at least gives me hope.
With how good Hollow Knight: Silksong is, I'm holding out hope that the quality of the next Mass Effect game will be top-notch as well. I know BioWare and EA have encountered problems with its development due to layoffs, which is unfortunate, but hopefully the team still working on it is having as much fun as Team Cherry had developing Silksong. Regardless, the latest indie hit finally arriving makes Mass Effect's eventual arrival feel more possible than ever.
