Was Silksong Supposed To Be A DLC for Hollow Knight?
Back in 2014, when the Hollow Knight kickstarter was in its final days, Hornet being added as a second playable character with her own moves and quests was one of the fundraiser's stretch goals. This goal was met within the last few days of the Kickstarter campaign, and originally was planned to be added as a DLC pack for Hollow Knight. However, due to the DLC's increasing scope, Team Cherry decided to spin off Silksong into its own title with Hornet as its main protagonist.

Do I Need To Play Hollow Knight Before Silksong?
Silksong is a direct sequel to Hollow Knight and features Hornet (one of the central characters of the original game) as the main protagonist. Though you do not need to play Hollow Knight before Silksong to understand the sequel's story or gameplay, playing the original is a good idea to get a feel for whether you like the Hollow Knight formula. Silksong is an evolution of Hollow Knight, but if you really don't like the original (or don't like Metroidvania platformers), you might not like the sequel.
Is Silksong A Sequel To Hollow Knight?
Hollow Knight Silksong is a sequel to Hollow Knight, but several details have been left unexplained, like whether there is a canon ending to Hollow Knight, how Hornet was taken from the Black Egg if the Siblings ending is accurate, and how long after the events of Hollow Knight that Silksong takes place.
When Does Hollow Knight Silksong Take Place?
In the original release trailer for Silksong in 2019, we see Hornet being taken away from Hallownest as a prisoner – thanks to the Gamescom demo, we know this is at the start of the game. This could imply that Silksong takes place very soon after the events of Hollow Knight. However, the timeline has not been confirmed, nor has a canon ending for Hollow Knight.
Does Silksong Take Place In Hallownest?
The setting for Hollow Knight Silksong is Pharloom, a "haunted kingdom" that exists far from Hallownest. In contrast to Hollow Knight, where the Knight descends into a kingdom's ruins, in Silksong, Hornet will ascend to a kingdom's peak.
Will Hollow Knight Silksong Feature Returning Characters?
It is not known whether there will be any returning characters from Hollow Knight in Silksong aside from Hornet herself, who showed up twice as a boss in the original game. The two trailers released for the game so far have not shown any returning characters, but there could still be some surprise appearances from familiar faces in the game.
How Many New Enemies & Bosses Are In Hollow Knight Silksong?
According to the 2025 release date trailer for Silksong, there are over 200 new enemies and more than 40 new bosses for players to encounter. It does not appear that any of these enemies or bosses are recycled from the original game, adding up to hundreds of brand-new enemies to fight as you ascend to the peak.
Does Hollow Knight Silksong Have Quests?
Like the original game, Hollow Knight Silksong will feature quests, but the quest system has been overhauled to provide missions via a quest board rather than NPC dialogue. According to the developers, the new quest system was one of the planned major features for Silksong.
Though we haven't been shown exactly what this new quest system looks like, both trailers (and product description pages) seem to suggest quests will be a major focus for the game.
Does Silksong Have Charms?
While Silksong does not have Charms like in the original Hollow Knight, it will have new equippable items that grant charm-like effects. These new items include Tools, Traps, and other mechanisms that can be equipped via the new Crest screen.
Is There A Hollow Knight Silksong Demo?
Unfortunately, a public demo Silksong fans can play at home is not available. The only Silksong demos released so far were available to play in person at both E3 in 2019 and GamesCom in 2025.
