At the time of this writing, Hollow Knight: Silksong is the highest-rated game on review aggregate site OpenCritic. Hollow Knight: Silksong has been one of the industry's most highly-anticipated games for years, and it's safe to say that it largely lived up to the hype. Silksong debuted to a great deal of praise from fans and critics alike, and proved so popular that it crashed basically every digital video game platform from Steam to the Switch eShop.
Something that made Hollow Knight: Silksong stand out compared to the vast majority of game releases is the fact that it launched without any professional reviews available. Team Cherry decided not to send out Hollow Knight: Silksong review codes so that everyone would be experiencing the game at the same time. But now that Silksong has been out for a few days, reviews are starting to trickle in, and they paint a very pretty picture of the wildly successful Metroidvania.
Hollow Knight: Silksong Is Being Review Bombed
Hollow Knight: Silksong may be one of the biggest sequels of the year, but some fans are incredibly unhappy with the title for a very valid reason.
Hollow Knight: Silksong Reviews Make it the Highest-Rated Game of All Time — For Now
Hollow Knight: Silksong currently has 10 reviews on OpenCritic, with nine of them perfect scores and one of them a 98/100. This gives Hollow Knight: Silksong a 98 average and in turn makes it the highest-rated game on the platform, beating heavy hitters like Super Mario Odyssey, Baldur's Gate 3, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Grand Theft Auto 4, Elden Ring, Astro Bot, The Last of Us Remastered, God of War (2018), and Persona 5 Royal. This is definitely an impressive debut, but fans should keep in mind that it's highly likely that Silksong's score will drop in the days and weeks ahead as more reviews are turned in.
There have been some complaints about Silksong since its launch, with some criticizing the game's boss runbacks and general difficulty. Team Cherry is looking to release Silksong updates that will address some of the criticisms aimed at the game, while fans have wasted little time releasing mods that make the changes they want. It's likely that some outlets will score the game lower than the perfect scores it's been getting, which will drag its average down, though one has to imagine it will still stay above 90 when it's all said and done.
Another caveat that fans should keep in mind is that OpenCritic doesn't take into account games that released before 2013, with rare exceptions like Grand Theft Auto 4. For the most part, OpenCritic's scope is 2013 to present, which means Silksong isn't being put up against something like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which has a 99 rating on Metacritic. Of course, Ocarina of Time's score comes with its own caveat as well, as it released at a time when there were far fewer game reviews being taken into consideration for any given title.
No matter what happens with Silksong's review score, it's not going to change the fact that the game is a massive success. Silksong has smashed records and completely blown away the expectations of many, and should comfortably find itself in the Game of the Year conversation.
