A recent update to the Hollow Knight: Silksong listing on Steam's backend had fans excited about a potentially imminent beta test, only to be let down eventually. The wait for Hollow Knight: Silksong has been excruciating for many, and with 2025 just a few months away, there is still no concrete release window for the highly anticipated Metroidvania.

Developer Team Cherry first revealed Hollow Knight: Silksong in 2019 after the sweltering success of its predecessor, 2017's Hollow Knight. Since then, however, the indie team has seemingly taken a vow of silence regarding the sequel's release plans. Team Cherry did provide a development update on Hollow Knight: Silksong last year, stating that the game was originally planned for launch in the first half of 2023, but will now take longer. The radio silence resumed after that, and it was recently noticed that over 2,024 days have passed since Hollow Knight: Silksong's first reveal, still with no release window in sight.

Predictably, many fans have taken it upon themselves to deduce when Team Cherry may provide another update on Hollow Knight: Silksong's release. This scavenger hunt for clues recently led to a seemingly huge discovery on SteamDB by Reddit user Frequent-Rest-2171, where they found a new update labeled "Hollow Knight: Silksong for Beta Testing" on the backend of the game's Steam storefront listing. The revelation of a possible beta test immediately piqued the attention of fans who'd been waiting for years to learn more about Hollow Knight: Silksong, but it unfortunately turned out to be a false alarm.

Recent Hollow Knight: Silksong Steam Update was a Nothingburger

It was soon realized that the "Beta Testing" update wasn't unique to Hollow Knight: Silksong, as over 55,000 Steam games received a similar update on their backends on August 27, 2024. At the moment, it's unclear what this update entails for Steam titles, but it certainly doesn't tease an imminent announcement for Hollow Knight: Silksong. The prospect of an out-of-the-blue update on the game was also somewhat dubious, especially after Hollow Knight: Silksong skipped Gamescom 2024, one of the bigger gaming events of the year that recently concluded.

With 2024 set to close out in a few months, only a handful of gaming events remain where Hollow Knight: Silksong could potentially be shown off. The current likeliest candidate is the 2024 Game Awards ceremony, which is scheduled to air on December 12. A PlayStation State of Play is also rumored for September 2024, but since Hollow Knight: Silksong is a day one Game Pass release, its marketing rights may lie with Xbox. Regardless of whether Hollow Knight: Silksong is shown off this year, though, it seems almost certain that a 2024 release is not on the cards anymore.
