The first Hollow Knight was home to an assortment of charming NPCs, and Hollow Knight: Silksong continues that legacy by putting its own cast of colorful characters at the forefront of the experience. Shakra is a fearsome warrior and cartographer who hands out maps and pins, Garmond and Zaza are a lovable dynamic duo who help Hornet in some boss fights, and the Bell Beast is Hollow Knight: Silksong's primary method of fast travel, and an adorable one at that.

A plethora of memorable characters line the many different regions of Hollow Knight: Silksong's Kingdom of Pharloom, many of whom have some useful things to offer protagonist Hornet. Styx is one such NPC. But while some players are going to desperately need what Styx offers, others might never make the journey back to the enigmatic ally.

Hollow Knight: Silksong's Styx Is Useful, But Only For The Right Crowd

Hollow Knight: Silksong's Styx Offers a Valuable Resource

Hollow Knight: Silksong is home to a consumable item called a 'Silkeater'. These little grubs allow players to burst their silk cocoon from anywhere, meaning that players don't need to revisit the site of their last death to retrieve their dropped Rosary Beads. These Silkeaters are dotted around the Kingdom of Pharloom, but they're a fairly rare sight. That is until players meet Styx.

After reaching Hollow Knight: Silksong's Greymoor, players can climb their way up to Sinner's Road, a dark, dingy, and maggot-infested cavern. If players manage to avoid the numerous obstacles along the way, they'll eventually encounter Styx, a large spider-like creature hanging from an intricate web structure made of bones.

Styx greets Hornet tentatively and tells her to return later, when they'll have a gift prepared for the Silksong protagonist. If players do just that, they'll see that Styx has produced a handful of Silkeaters that they can take with them on their journey. What makes Styx such an important NPC is that they continue to produce Silkeaters throughout the game, with players being able to return at regular intervals to refill their supply.

Not Everyone Will Need What Styx Is Offering

Silkeaters are, objectively, a very useful item. Hollow Knight: Silksong is home to some rather unforgiving boss runbacks, and there are countless environmental hazards sprinkled throughout Pharloom that essentially make cocoon-retrieval impossible. If players are caught in a difficult spot and don't want to risk losing all the Rosary Beads they've worked so hard to get – especially given the game's controversial economy – then having a Silkeater in their inventory can be a big relief.

That said, by the time players reach Styx on Sinner's Road, they might not need a steady supply of Silkeaters. At this stage, players are likely close to the end of Hollow Knight: Silksong Act 1, and they've probably experienced their fair share of tricky boss runbacks already. It's very likely some players won't have used a single Silkeater by the time they meet Styx, and have instead learned to adapt to Silksong's sometimes unforgiving nature.

Those who are skilled enough to breeze through boss runbacks probably won't have a use for Styx's regular supply of Silkeaters. That might be true as well for those players who take a more cautious approach to the game's economy, and swap their loose Rosary Beads for Rosary Strings and Necklaces to ensure that nothing important gets lost upon death.
