It almost doesn't seem real, but the wait for Hollow Knight: Silksong has finally reached its end. Over the years, the anticipation for Hollow Knight: Silksong has reached enormous heights, and its launch day was a clear example of just how much that excitement had grown.

The first few hours of Silksong's launch were hectic, as the game had crashed a variety of online storefronts. Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch stores were all down for a few hours, demonstrating just how historical of a launch Silksong is. This release is years in the making, and while it's thrilling to finally have the next chapter of Hollow Knight in my hands, I can't help but also feel a little sad that the wait is over.

Ever since the original announcement in 2019, to say that gamers had been eagerly awaiting the game's launch would be an understatement. After several years of teases and sneak peeks, developer Team Cherry revealed a second trailer at a 2022 Xbox showcase, leading many (myself, included) to believe that 2023 would be the targeted release date. Of course, 2023 came and went without any Silksong, which ignited an even bigger firestorm of theories and memes than there already was. Silksong's development history is notorious at this point, and while it was maddening, I found it to be incredibly fun, as well.

Both before the 2023 delay and after, the jokes that popped up across the internet helped pass the time in a way that not only made it easier, but it also built a strong community. Whether on Reddit, X, Instagram, or even just meeting other gamers out in the wild, talking about Silksong could be an instant way to connect with someone. Now that Silksong is here, those years of suffering alongside fellow Hollow Knight fans are now over. However, there is one silver lining to the end of this era.

The ability for an indie studio as small as Team Cherry to bring so many people together is a beautiful thing. In a year filled with heavy-hitters like Death Stranding 2 and the upcoming Ghost of Yotei, a small game like Silksong has proven to be a juggernaut, and the community is partially to thank.

Even though it took six years after its announcement to finally get here, I genuinely enjoyed waiting for Silksong. Every few months, it seemed like a new wave of speculation would rise and crash without any significant outcome, but that was okay. The memes and connection were well worth it, and it makes me wonder how long it will be until another community like that is formed again. A small indie title was able to build a massive wave of hype, and it will be hard to capture that feeling again. Starting Silksong yesterday felt surreal, but I didn't expect it to bring forth so many conflicting feelings.

Of course, I'm incredibly happy to finally play Silksong, and I've been enjoying every moment, even when the game makes me want to pull my hair out. It's been a wild ride to get to this point, and even though I'll greatly miss the online community Silksong built, I'm thrilled to see what Team Cherry has in store next.
