Hollow Knight: Silksong is set to release later this week, and it will be available on all modern platforms. While it is expected that the game will be very similar across all those platforms, there is a compelling reason for players to pick it up on PC. Specifically, community-created mods will almost certainly play a big role in the future of Hollow Knight: Silksong's PC release, and those mods will not be readily available to players who are playing the game on consoles.
The original Hollow Knight inspired a robust PC modding scene, and there are some truly tremendous ways for players to alter the experience with mods. For example, players can add expansive voice acting to the game with the Hallownest-Vocalized mod, and they can add new areas, boss fights, and more with the likes of the Pale Court mod. While the game provides plenty of outstanding content without any modification, mods gave players some great reasons to return to Hollow Knight, even after reaching 112% completion.
Mods Are The Future of Silksong on PC
The same will almost certainly be true for Hollow Knight: Silksong on PC, and there are likely to be mods that alter the game in many different ways. Initially, those mods will probably focus around basic QoL improvements and difficulty tweaks, and while those may not be as exciting as the large-scale mods that are now available for the original Hollow Knight, they will undoubtedly improve the base experience for some players. Additionally, it is extremely likely that content-expanding mods will be available for Silksong in the future, providing further incentive to get the game on PC.
Silksong on Consoles Has Its Appeal
While the prospect of mods is a good reason to go for the PC version of Silksong, there is one thing that many PCs lack: portability. For this reason, some players may prefer to pick up the game on the Nintendo eShop and play it on their Switch or Switch 2. Indeed, Nintendo's hybrid consoles will make it easy to play Silksong on the go, and having that ability will be more important than having access to mods for some players. That said, Silksong is Steam Deck verified, and players who own Valve's handheld will be able to enjoy both portability and modding capabilities.
There is one other reason that players may want to grab Silksong on a console instead of a PC. Specifically, it is reported that Sillkong will have a physical release, and physical media collectors may consider owning a copy of the game to be more important than having mod access. However, it is indicated that the physical releases will not be available until 2026, and that the Switch and Switch 2 versions will be the first ones released, making this point irrelevant to players who want to play near Silksong's launch date.
Silksong's Price Encourages Double-Dipping
While players should spend some time considering which platform will give them the best experience, it is important to mention that Silksong's launch price is $19.99, just $5 more than Hollow Knight at release. This price is sure to entice many players to pick up the game for multiple platforms, something that they might not consider if it had a AAA price tag.
Indeed, players could start by grabbing Silksong for PC on launch day, in order to have access to the preliminary mods that are likely to be available, and then pick up a physical copy for a console in the future. Alternatively, Hollow Knight fans could play the game on a console first and then buy the PC version once large-scale mods are released.
