Homeworld 3 has many different ships to build, no matter which fleet players choose to play as. Winning a game will require players to balance their resources while building ships and researching better ones.

Building ships will always need to be done as the enemy will rarely give you a chance to build. Between your Mothership and Carriers, players will have multiple ways of building ships and can quickly jump ahead of their opponents in terms of numbers if they use all the tools available to them.

How To Build Units In Homeworld 3

Ships are built from a Carrier or Mothership. To build new ships, select the Build/Research button in the top right of the screen or press B to use the hotkey and open the menu. Players will only be able to build the first Strikecraft at the start of the game and can unlock new ships to build by researching that ship. Both fleets have an ideal research path players should follow to quickly get access to powerful ships.

After a ship has been researched it can be built. To build a ship, simply select its name in the build menu with a left click. Using Shift + left click will have five of that ship queued up to be built. Only one of each type of ship can be built at a time, with any queued-up ship being built until the player runs out of resources or hits the population limit. Built ships will head to a Mothership or Carrier's rally point, which is automatically set right to the right of the ship unless players choose to change it. When hovering over a ship in the menu, players can see:

Cost in resources.
Time to build the ship.
What the ship is best at fighting.
What the ship is weak against.
Requirements to build that ship.

A Mothership or Carrier can still build every ship available at once. When doing so, resources will be evenly split between each ship's construction, and will quickly drain players' resources but can help them resupply their fleet quickly. Pressing down on the Scroll Wheel of the mouse over a ship's name will pause its construction, with right-clicking canceling a ship's production and refunding any resources invested in the ship.

The resource cost of building a ship will be spread out over the amount of time it takes for that ship to be built, with resources leaving your total every second any ships are being built. By building Carriers and building units out of them, players can construct the same type of ship up to three times at once to speed up production of individual ship types. While the game allows players to build dozens of ships all at once, this will quickly drain all their resources unless they are being collected efficiently.
