Homeworld 3 has multiple game modes for players to choose from. Campaign and Skirmish are fairly straightforward, offering a list of missions and a story, or just jumping right into battles against AI or other players online. The third and more intriguing option is War Games, a Rogue-like game mode with its own level system and missions.

War Games can be played offline alone or with friends to make the challenging missions easier. In War Games, players will have an overall account level that will increase the more they play, giving you access to different fleets.

A Hiigaran Ship Capturing An Enemy Frigate
Homeworld 3: How To Capture Ships

Players can capture enemy ships and make them their own in Homeworld 3; here's how to do it.

The Basics Of War Games in Homeworld 3

A Few Of The Fleet Options In The War Games

Depending on the player's War Games level, they will have a list of fleets to choose from, three for both the Hiigaran and Incarnate. Each fleet has different starting ships and access to only a handful of ships from their respective faction, each with strengths and weaknesses. By completing missions, players will earn XP and get access to different fleets, and completing more missions will reward more XP. Players can also select difficulty modifiers in the game settings menu to make the game more challenging while rewarding them with more XP for completing the mission.

In a game, players will only have access to a carrier and have to fight off waves of enemies while also trying to complete the main objectives. These waves of enemies will come from Incursion Points that will be marked on the map before the enemy arrives to let players prepare. After completing the main objective of that level, the Initiate Hyperspace button will appear on-screen and let players progress to another level. All ships made, resources earned, upgrades researched, artifacts obtained, and control groups set will carry over to the next area.

How To Get & Use Artifacts in Homeworld 3

The Player Choosing An Artifact In War Games

One unique element of War Games are artifacts found throughout the map. Artifacts are long cargo containers marked Salvage and guarded by enemy ships. A friendly ship close enough to the Salvage will allow players to choose an artifact, which can be made by pressing the yellow question mark icon at the top right of the screen below your resources.

Artifacts are randomized and offer various bonuses to ships in your fleet. Many of them also have a downside that must be considered. While artifacts don't need to be used, the bonuses will greatly strengthen your fleet's ability to deal with the growing enemy threat as you progress from mission to mission.

Can You Win In War Games?

The Threat Escalation Level In A War Game

While it's not necessary to win to get XP, players are able to win a War Game by completing the main objectives in three sections of that game. The sections, objectives, enemy ships, and artifacts will be randomized every time you play. The longer players take to complete the main objective of a section, the more enemies will continue to arrive.

This means it's vital to move quickly and complete your main objective fast to proceed, as the enemy will eventually outnumber you, with their strength indicated by the Threat Escalation Level at the top left. Completing a War Game will reward players with the most amount of XP, but even participating and completing some main objectives will help your player level increase and get access to stronger fleets and ships.
