If players focus on playing the primary Trailblazer Mission of Honkai: Star Rail, then the first Malefic Ape they meet would be in the A Dragon Gallant, Its Ocean Distant mission as the team attempts to remove the three Vidyadhara Seals.

However, apart from the monster being seen in the main mission, this Honkai: Star Rail enemy can also be found in other content like Forgotten Hall, Simulated Universe, or simply as a guardian for precious Chest boxes. Due to the new mechanic this opponent brings, it’s a good idea for people to understand how to beat Malefic Ape in Honkai: Star Rail.

Malefic Ape in Honkai: Star Rail is a deadly single-target damage dealer, but players can easily get around its attacks by understanding the Monitoring mechanics. In the Simulated Universe, this foe can be found alone as an Elite boss, but in the open-world, the Ape can be found with two other Abundance Sprites.

When the battle begins, Malefic Ape casts Wrathful Roar, which grants it three stacks of Gusto and marks a random target for Monitoring. Afterward, whenever a character uses a Skill, the Monitoring will move to lock on that character. If Basic Attack or Ultimate are used, the lock will not shift.

Once the boss’ turn comes, it will cast its Enhancing ability, then move again immediately to attack the Monitored target. One Gusto will be consumed this way, and once all three are used, the Malefic Ape must recast the Wrathful Roar before repeating the same moves again. Due to its self-enhancing ability, the Malefic Ape can deal massive damage to unprotected or squishy units, so players should plan their Skill casts properly.

First, pay attention to the turn sequence on the top-left corner of the screen. Take note of characters that move before the Malefic Ape, and choose who should be taking the damage by ensuring the chosen unit is the only one using Skill while the rest works on Basic Attack.

Alternatively, players can also use this opportunity to protect the last Skill-caster. For instance, if March 7th, Asta, and Yanqing move before the Ape, and Trailblazers wish to use Yanqing’s Skill, then they can ensure he will be protected by using March’s shield on her turn.

The rest of the Abundance Sprites are nothing to worry about as they don’t deal significant damage, but eliminating them surely will remove some hindrances. Here are some notable moves each minion does:

  • Wooden Lupus: Summons 1 Shadow Jackhyena.
  • Shadow Jackhyena: Has no moves other than dealing Lightning DMG. They won’t disappear even if Wooden Lupus is defeated, so the Lupus should be targeted first.
  • Golden Hound: After being beaten, the ally next to it will instantly get a turn. In this case, the Malefic Ape will move immediately, so players should be careful when eliminating this opponent. Poor management may cause their DPS to get knocked out under the Ape’s Monitor.

Honkai: Star Rail is now available on Android, iOS, and PC. A PlayStation version is in development.
