Sampo is an intriguing mercenary character that Trailblazers encounter during their journey in Honkai: Star Rail. Initially, he may appear underwhelming. As a Nihility character, Sampo specializes in weakening and damaging the enemies through DoT damage, particularly with Wind Sheer. While he can be highly effective when properly built and equipped with suitable light cones, his true value may not be immediately apparent to players at the beginning. This is because unlike some of the more popular Nihility characters like Welt or Pela, Sampo doesn't focus on a distinct debuff on his own and requires proper set-up to ensure he can apply wind sheer consistently.
However, dedicated fans of Sampo in Honkai: Star Rail can enhance his effectiveness by utilizing the right build and focusing on his traces as they progress through the game, thereby making him a valuable team member, especially in endgame content like the Forgotten Hall. Fortunately, Sampo has access to various options for light cones, both free-to-play and otherwise, that can work effectively for him.
5 Fermata
- Base ATK (LVL 80): 476
- Base DEF (LVL 80): 330
- Base HP (LVL 80): 952
- Effect: Increases Break Effect dealt by the wearer by 16%/20%/24%/28%/32%, and increases their DMG to enemies afflicted with Shock or Wind Shear by 16%/20%/24%/28%/32%. This also applies to DoT.
Fermata is an exceptional 4-star free-to-play option for Sampo, and in fact, he is one of the few characters who can fully capitalize on Fermata's potential. This light cone is easily obtainable and can be max superimposed by collecting enough Lucent Afterglow primarily through Forgetten Hall, providing several benefits to Sampo's gameplay. Not only does Fermata enhance Sampo's damage output by increasing his Break Effect stat, but it also boosts his damage against enemies affected by Wind Shear, a debuff that Sampo frequently applies. Consequently, Fermata significantly enhances Sampo's DPS potential and allows him to function effectively as a sub-DPS character when properly built.
4 Good Night And Sleep Well
- Base ATK (LVL 80): 476
- Base DEF (LVL 80): 330
- Base HP (LVL 80): 952
- Effect: For every debuff the target enemy has, the DMG dealt by the wearer increases by 12%/15%/18%/21%/24%, stacking up to 3 time(s). This effect also applies to DoT.
Good Night And Sleep Well is another suitable 4-star option for Sampo, as it enhances his sub-DPS potential. This light cone is especially valuable when the enemy is affected by various debuffs, not solely focused on DoT damage. Therefore, players who use Sampo in conjunction with other characters capable of inflicting DoT damage, such as Serval with her ability to inflict Shock, or alongside other Nihility characters that deal other kinds of debuffs like slow, can greatly benefit from equipping Good Night And Sleep Well to amplify Sampo's overall damage output. This light cone also functions in great synergy in Simulated Universe, if players choose the Nihility path during their run.
3 Before the Tutorial Mission
- Base ATK (LVL 80): 476
- Base DEF (LVL 80): 330
- Base HP (LVL 80): 952
- Effect: Increases the wearer’s Effect Hit Rate by 20%/25%/30%/35%/40%. When the wearer attacks DEF-reduced enemies, regenerates 4/5/6/7/8 Energy.
Before the Tutorial is another suitable free-to-play option for Sampo, although it is limited to an event in Honkai: Star Rail. Players who participate in this event can easily max superimpose this light cone, allowing them to greatly benefit from its significantly high effect hit rate, which enhances Sampo's Wind Sheer affliction. However, it is worth noting that this option may be more fitting for Pela, as she can independently reduce the enemies' DEF due to her kit. Nonetheless, players who utilize both Sampo and Pela in a team where Pela is equipped with a more suitable option such as Resolution Shines As Pearls of Sweat can still benefit from equipping Before the Tutorial on Sampo. Alternatively, even the first part of the effect alone is strong enough for players to consider, especially if they are seeking an entirely free-to-play option.
2 Eyes of the Prey
- Base ATK (LVL 80): 476
- Base DEF (LVL 80): 330
- Base HP (LVL 80): 952
- Effect: Increases Effect Hit Rate of its wearer by 20%/25%/30%/35%/40% and increases DoT by 24%/30%/36%/42%/48%.
Showcasing Sampo in its artwork, Eyes of the Prey is another ideal light cone to be utilized with Sampo. What makes Eyes of the Prey a great option for Sampo is its unconditional effect, which makes it versatile and suitable for any team composition featuring Sampo. Additionally, it proves to be a valuable choice for players who haven't heavily invested in maximizing the stats on Sampo's relics, as it provides a flat Effect Hit Rate and DoT DMG. This significantly aids Sampo in applying Wind Sheer more consistently and strongly, thereby increasing its damage without requiring as much effort compared to other 4-star light cone options.
1 In the Name of the World
- Base ATK (LVL 80): 582
- Base DEF (LVL 80): 463
- Base HP (LVL 80): 1058
- Effect: Increases the wearer’s DMG to debuffed enemies by 20%/25%/30%/35%/40%. When the wearer uses their Skill, the Effect Hit Rate for this attack increases by 20%/25%/30%/35%/40%, and ATK increases by 20%/25%/30%/35%/40%.
Welt's signature 5-star light cone, In the Name of the World, also works exceptionally well on Sampo, synergizing perfectly with his kit without imposing difficult conditions to enhance Sampo's utility. This light cone is particularly beneficial if players intend to primarily utilize Sampo for high Wind Sheer DoT. It not only increases Sampo's Effect Hit Rate, allowing him to apply Wind Sheer more consistently but also boosts his ATK and overall damage against debuffed enemies, which aligns well with Sampo's playstyle. Therefore, In the Name of the World is the top choice for a 5-star light cone, if not the best overall, even though players may also consider Incessant Rain, Silver Wolf's limited banner 5-star light cone. However, it is worth noting that while Incessant Rain can be effective on Sampo, it is not worth pulling solely for Sampo, as it may be better utilized on other Nihility characters.
Honkai: Star Rail is now available on Android, iOS, and PC. A PlayStation version is in development.
