However, what fans didn’t know early on was that series creator Kohei Horikoshi had no intention of giving Deku a fast quirk reveal in My Hero Academia.
Unlike most shounen protagonists who reveal their abilities in the very first episode and chapter of their series, Deku never had any chance to showcase his own powers in his debut in My Hero Academia, both in the anime and manga. Even so, Deku undeniably proves that he doesn’t need to be flashy on his debut to leave a lasting impact on the fans, as he remains one of the most compelling anime protagonists to this day.

From the beginning of My Hero Academia, it’s clear that Deku failed to manifest a quirk, unlike 80% of the world population. As a result, he became the laughingstock among his classmates, especially Bakugo, who began looking down on him after he manifested his explosive quirk. Despite this, he never throws his dreams away, believing that one day he will follow in the footsteps of the legendary hero, All Might.
Without a quirk, Deku has no choice but to continue working hard, hoping that someday he will stand on the same field as his idols, protecting humans and fighting villains at the same time. A quirkless Deku is just one of the reasons why he fails to use any abilities on his debut, unlike Bakugo and the rest of the Pro Heroes, who also made their appearance in the first chapter of My Hero Academia.

Another reason why there was a delay in showing Deku’s quirk in My Hero Academia has been revealed by manga editor Hitoshi Koike in an interview with Manga Plus. When asked about whether the series got approved in its first review, his answer mentioned creator Kohei Horikoshi’s stance regarding the timing of Deku’s quirk reveal:
“In the story, Deku—the main protagonist—only uses his “quirk” from the third episode (chapter). There were many opinions about this. Most of them believed it would be better for the main protagonist to use his abilities from the first episode. I believe the opinions were divided over the fact that All Might does not tell Deku about the inheritance of his quirk within the first chapter, so some felt it may have been better to make the first half more compact and easier to read. This idea had also been discussed between Horikoshi and I, and we wanted to do it had it been possible.
However, because of the number of pages, we had no choice but to leave the episodes as they are now. In our hearts, it’s really from the third episode that we would go in with full force, and Horikoshi said “I won’t change it.”

As it turns out, the limited number of pages in the early chapters of My Hero Academia significantly affected the timing of Deku’s quirk reveal. In other words, it’s not just because of the creator’s intention, but also because of a valid technical constraint. While many people believed it was better for Deku to show his abilities in the first chapter, Kohei Horikoshi seemingly prioritized Deku’s struggles to allow readers ample time to sympathize with his helplessness.
But even if Deku failed to show his quirk early on, his heroic traits undeniably moved the hearts of the fans. When he throws himself in danger to save Bakugo from the Sludge Villain and when he refuses to give up on his dreams despite being quirkless, he already made a difference, setting him apart from other generic protagonists.

Deku Uses His Quirk for the First Time in Chapter 3
As mentioned, Deku only used his quirk for the first time in My Hero Academia chapter 3 and season 1, episode 4 of the anime adaptation. Before he put his newfound abilities to use, he underwent immense training from All Might to prepare and acclimate his body. This setup is uncommon in most shounen anime, where the main character usually reveals their abilities in the first episode before undergoing training from a mentor.
Specifically, Deku tapped into the power of One For All during the entrance examination at U.A. High School. A single strand of All Might’s hair made such a huge difference, so much so, that when he uses the quirk for the first time, he blows his humongous target to pieces, leaving him suffering from heavy recoil.

Overall, delaying Deku’s quirk allowed space not just for Horikoshi to work on Deku’s struggles amid a world where almost everyone has powers, but also to develop Deku’s relationship with All Might. He established what it truly means to become quirkless through Deku’s pain and struggles, which obviously hit harder among fans. Above all else, he also established a genuine connection between Deku and All Might in My Hero Academia.
