Summary
- Guerrilla Games is likely working on multiple live-service projects, including a Horizon multiplayer spin-off and possibly a MMORPG with NCsoft.
- The studio has "16 plans" for future Horizon projects, with only six known so far, hinting at more live-service games in the works.
A new job listing from Horizon series developer Guerrilla Games may hint at the studio having several live-service projects in the works. The first-party PlayStation team last released Horizon Forbidden West's Burning Shores expansion in 2023, but has been quietly working on multiple games behind-the-scenes.
Most notably, Guerrilla has been working on a Horizon multiplayer spin-off game, which is assumed to be a live-service title but is yet to be announced. Rumors of a Horizon MMORPG being developed in collaboration with Korean game developer NCsoft have also been circulating for a while. The expansion of the Horizon franchise doesn't come as a surprise, as Guerrilla announced in 2023 that it has "16 plans" for future Horizon projects, with only six of them being somewhat known so far.
While the Amsterdam-based studio has Horizon 3 and the upcoming LEGO Horizon Adventures in the works, it appears Guerrilla may also have multiple live-service titles in development. A recent job opening for a Lead Producer role at Guerrilla mentions one of the responsibilities as "ensuring the smooth and efficient delivery of our live service games." This could hint at the studio potentially working on more live-service titles than just the initially anticipated Horizon multiplayer spin-off game.
Guerrilla May Be Working on More Live-Service Games than Anticipated
Given that there are at least 10 more Horizon projects under the wraps currently, it can reasonably be surmised that one or more of them could be planned as live-service games. Sony has been bullish on first-party live-service titles in recent years, and the Horizon franchise seems to be one of the gaming giant's biggest bets right now, so the chances of the series spawning multiple live-service games in the future aren't out of the realm of possibility. The listing could also be referring to the heavily-rumored Horizon MMORPG.
On the flip side, it'll be interesting to see if Guerrilla Games may be considering resurrecting its past franchises like Killzone via the live-service route. PlayStation released the last Killzone game, Shadow Fall, as a launch title for the PlayStation 4 in 2013, after which the first-person shooter franchise was unfortunately retired. Over a decade later, though, the company is clearly looking to diversify its first-party portfolio.
