A reputable insider claims that Guerrilla Games may release the long-rumored Horizon multiplayer project before the third mainline entry in the series. If this report holds true, fans looking forward to a Horizon Forbidden West successor may have an even longer wait ahead of them.
Guerrilla Games is currently stewarding a whopping 16 Horizon projects, which includes cross-media adaptations. Some fans have even cleverly deciphered some of these projects, such as a Horizon live-service multiplayer game, MMO, TV adaptation, Forbidden West sequel, Zero Dawn remaster, and, of course, the upcoming LEGO Horizon Adventures. Most of these projects are being handled by external studios, with Guerrilla supervising the process.
Guerrilla's Multiplayer Horizon Game Could be Targeting PS6 Release
Some newly surfaced evidence suggests that Guerrilla's Horizon multiplayer spin-off won't hit the market before the PlayStation 6 does.
As far as internal development goes, work on the Horizon multiplayer game has been underway at Guerrilla for several years, alongside the third singleplayer installment following Horizon Forbidden West. However, it seems that Horizon fans specifically waiting for the latter might have to exercise some more patience, as credible industry insider Jason Schreier alleged in a recent Spawncast episode that Guerrilla will release the Horizon multiplayer project first. The third single-player Horizon game, meanwhile, is a "ways off."
Sony May Be Very Confident in the Horizon Multiplayer Game
Schreier also remarked that Sony's live-service push was "no joke," and that the Horizon multiplayer game is among the handful of live-service projects that survived cancelations. This could imply that Sony is quite confident in the game, but after Concord's disastrous commercial run, only time will tell how the Horizon multiplayer project fares in the market. Given that this game has been in the works since 2018 at the least, it appears quite plausible that Guerrilla could be at the tail end of development right about now.
Horizon's alluring world and hulking machine enemies are two of its best qualities, and the prospect of a multiplayer game that makes good use of them seems very promising. Previous rumors have also claimed that the Horizon multiplayer project could even introduce bigger machines, so it could end up offering quite a distinctive experience compared to other live-service titles. Conversely, there's also the question of post-launch support. Naughty Dog canceled The Last of Us Online due to the immense amount of resources required to support the live-service project after launch, so it'll be interesting to see how Guerrilla plans to do the same for the Horizon multiplayer game.
