The original 1996 Resident Evil video game is widely considered to be the first to ever officially use the term "survival horror," though predecessors like 1989's Sweet Home and 1992's Alone in the Dark helped to shape some of the core mechanics of the genre. Having already influenced landmark franchises like Silent Hill and the standalone title Tormented Souls, Resident Evil has once again been earmarked as a central influence for a new entry in survival horror.

Cult of Blood Trailer Showcases Similarities to Resident Evil

Touted as being "inspired by a true story," Cult of Blood sees players taking on the role of a police officer investigating strange reports of vampire sightings coming from a remote village ruled by a blood cult. Upon arriving, players will quickly learn that what was supposed to be a routine mission has spiraled into a nightmare scenario where the killer cultists want to use the police officer as the final sacrifice in a ritual that will transform their reigning priestess into a goddess. Similar to the story in Resident Evil 4, players will have to battle against crazed villagers and try to stop the cultists from completing their horrific ritual, but they will have to do so while managing limited resources, moving with retro tank controls, and working around fixed camera angles during intense combat sequences that transition into chilling cinematic cutscenes.

Players will be able to acquire new gear and upgrade weapons in Cult of Blood, which will be necessary to overcome the challenges of risky melee and measured gunplay. Brutal boss battles will require skilled precision and careful planning, while swarms of deranged cultists and grotesque enemies, including supernatural horrors, seek to destroy both the body and mind of the lone police officer. Cult of Blood promotes itself as being perfect for fans of old-school survival horror games, and its similarities to the Resident Evil series make it one of many upcoming titles audiences may want to keep an eye on.

A number of new horror games inspired by genre classics have found success among veteran players and first-time gamers, often due to their nostalgic graphics and mechanics mixed with modern adjustments and improvements. Whether Cult of Blood will live up to the legacy of its spiritual predecessors remains to be seen, but interested fans can stay tuned for more updates ahead of its launch and follow along for news on other upcoming survival horror games.
