Summary

  • Season 3 of House of the Dragon may face delays due to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms postponement.
  • Fans of the show are worried that the new season might be pushed back to 2027.
  • There is speculation that HBO may want to space out the release of both shows.

Filming is now underway on House of the Dragon season 3, which really should mean that the next installment of the Game of Thrones prequel is closer than ever to arriving. However, some fans of the show believe that due to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms sadly getting a delay and not releasing in 2025 after all, the much-anticipated return of the third installment of House of the Dragon could very well be next on the cards.

House of the Dragon season 2 has been and gone now, which concluded with 'The Queen Who Ever Was' on August 4, 2024, so the wait for season 3 is really heating up. The long-awaited Game of Thrones prequel season two arrived in June last year and was greenlit for a third and fourth season. Based on George R.R. Martin's novel Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon focuses on the fall of the House Targaryen as the clan ascends into a huge civil war where families are broken apart by greed and betrayal. Season three will follow on from the epic tale that the House of the Dragon season 2 finale left off, but now, the stakes are even higher as the Targaryen dynasty will continue to reign, by fire and by blood.

House of the Dragon Fans Think Season 3 Could Get a Delay

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which will be a new spin-off set in the Game of Thrones universe, won't release this year as previously planned and, instead, has been pushed back to 2026. Although there wasn't an official release date for the spin-off, it had been slated to premiere on the small screen at some stage in 2025, but now it seems GoT fans will be waiting until winter (is coming?) To get their eyes on it. Now with one Game of Thrones series getting pushed further back, could House of the Dragon season 3 be next? Well, fans of the series certainly think this could be on the horizon.

According to Westerosies, one of the internet's leading sources on all things Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon season 3 could be pushed even further back to 2027 because of the delay to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. "Just had a thought. What if they delayed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms because they’re going to delay House of the Dragon Season 3 to 2027?…, said the outlet on Twitter/X. Another fan shuddered at the thought of a delay, "I hate that I read this and feel like it could be a very accurate take," while another fan said, "Wouldn't be at all surprised but would be saddened."

Under a realistic spotlight, this opinion does make sense, as HBO might want to give both shows room to breathe and their own time in the sun, so that they aren't so close together, which would mean that fans won’t be reunited with Rhaenyra, Alicent, and Daemon for quite some time yet. However, here's hoping that this isn't the case and fans get to watch season 3 sooner rather than later.

A release date for the third season of House of the Dragon hasn't yet been announced, but it's likely fans won't see new episodes until the summer of 2026 (or possibly even later).
