How to Block
The main gimmick with blocking that is not explained to players fully is that blocking can only be done while holding an Axe. Axes are one of the heavier options you can use with a fairly slow attack speed, but high damage. The Block Skill is the first skill you'll start the game with unlocked in the Axe tree, though this can easily be found before you understand that skills in that tree only work with the associated weapon equipped. With an Axe equipped, holding the following button to raise your Axe and block:
- PlayStation - L2
- PC - Shift + Right click
- Xbox - LT
You're able to hold up the axe and block for as long as you want, taking as many hits as you think necessary. While holding up your axe to block, you can still go straight into a dodge or attack animation by pressing the associated button. Wuchang can also walk slowly while blocking, so you're in no way locked into an animation if you choose to block and do have options.

How to Deflect (Parry)
Deflecting is done with the same buttons, you'll just need a weapon that has a discipline for Deflect, such as longswords. While you can hold the deflect button and block incoming damage, timing your deflect with the incoming attack will almost completely negate incoming damage and set you up for a counter-attack. Deflecting does take more work to land, but offers more flexibility than just blocking alone.

While blocking is the unique discipline for Axes, it's not recommended that you use it often, as the damage negated is not worthwhile. Blocking only stops about half the damage from going through, and any status effect associated with an attack will still start to build up and negatively affect you. Dodging may take a bit more skill, but it completely avoids incoming damage and will also charge up your spells when timed correctly.
There are also a lot of attacks done by regular enemies and bosses that can't be blocked, so dodging everything will keep you from wondering how you need to respond to an attack. With the overall speed of enemies in this game, dodging can also help set you up out of an enemy's current attack animation to get a few attacks in before they can properly respond.
What are Clashes in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers?
Clashes don't require a specific discipline in order to land, and can happen whenever you and an enemy's weapons happen to hit in combat. When this happens, some of the damage will be negated and both attacks will go through. There are some discipline skills that have the word Clash in them, and those essentially buff your clash to negate full damage whenever you do land one.
