Diablo 4 has a lot of activities that open up or become much more useful to complete in higher difficulties, especially in the endgame. While some of the activities can be a great option for trying to speed level, some activities require consumable resources; it may be better to save for now than to use.
Nightmare Dungeons have been a constant endgame activity that players have focused on grinding for many seasons. After getting a hold on Nightmare Dungeons, there is the next option up, Nightmare Escalation Dungeons, which provide their own challenges and even better rewards. Opening a Nightmare Escalation Dungeon requires an Escalation Sigil; here's how to get them.

Difficulty has replaced World Tiers in Diablo 4, offering even more of a challenge than before; here's how to change it.
How to Get Escalation Sigils in Diablo 4
Escalation Sigils are a legendary item that will have a very low drop rate if you're trying to get some before reaching the Torment 1 difficulty. While it's possible to find them on Expert or Penitent, the overall drop rate is very low, and it's not recommended to try and farm for them on these difficulties. Even on Torment 1, your odds are only slightly good, and you'll want to keep progressing to higher difficulties to get a more often spawn rate.
No matter the difficulty you are choosing to play on, focus on the following activities to try and get an Escalation Sigil to drop:
- Killing the World Boss.
- Killing the Blood Maiden.
- Clearing Nightmare Dungeons.
- High rank rewards in Horadric Strongrooms.
- Potentially in caches from the Tree of Whispers.
- Elite enemies (very low drop rate).
- In some seasonal reward caches.

What are Nightmare Escalation Dungeons in Diablo 4?
Escalation Nightmare Dungeons are three consecutive Nightmare Dungeons that get progressively harder, with additional multipliers being added with each new dungeon. At any point during this gauntlet, you can leave and keep the rewards you found, but once the Nightmare Escalation Dungeon disappears, you won't be able to jump back in where you left off.
Before entering the portal from one dungeon to the next, you'll see the modifiers being added on to that next dungeon.
It is highly recommended that you don't use any Escalation Sigils until you are playing on Torment 1 difficulty. If you do play a Nightmare Escalation Dungeon on that difficulty and complete the three dungeons, you'll eventually find the boss Astaroth. Finding Astaroth is the main goal of Nightmare Escalation Dungeons, and he won't appear at all if you play on the lower four difficulties. He can potentially drop Uber Unique items, making him one of the best bosses to fight, so save your Sigils that unlock him until you're playing on a difficulty that drops them.
