There's a lot of evidence to gather in Phasmophobia to figure out which ghost you're dealing with and freezing temps is one of the trickier ones to get. Thankfully, you can use the thermometer to figure out temps, and you can also use it to find the ghost room.

Like all other equipment, you get three different tiers of thermometers, each getting more accurate and quicker to read the room's temperature as you go up. Ironically, the Tier 1 thermometer used to be the best one in the game, but that changed significantly when the game came out with the Eventide Update.

How To Read The Thermometer

Depending on which tier of thermometer you have in Phasmophobia, you're going to be reading for freezing temps a little differently. Before you start investigating, it's important to remember that not every ghost will give you freezing temperatures as evidence, because not all of them have it.

If the ghost tends to move around a lot, then you'll have a difficult time trying to get an accurate reading. So, it's best to find the ghost room, and then just chill in the van for a bit and wait. This will essentially make sure the ghost doesn't follow you around too much, giving it time to make the room cold enough to get an accurate reading.

Tier 1

You automatically unlock the Tier 1 thermometer in Phasmophobia, and it's the most unreliable one at your disposal because it tends to fluctuate more than the other tiers. To get the best out of it, you need to find the ghost room and then leave it in that room for a while before you get an accurate temperature reading. It's really slow to update, so you'll need to have some patience with this one. You'll know the temps are freezing if the red bar goes below the 0-degree Celsius line.

The main benefit that the Tier 1 thermometer has above the other two is that it doesn't count as an electronic piece of equipment, so it can't attract ghosts to you when they're hunting. It also reads temperatures passively, so you don't have to click any buttons to get a reading, instead just throw it down in the ghost room and wait for it to update.

Tier 2

The Tier 2 thermometer is unlocked at Level 36, and it gives a quicker reading than Tier 1 without being as unreliable. You need to click the USE button to switch it on, and you can continue holding it to get a reading and for live updates on the temperature. The temperature will update every 2.5 seconds, so it's still a little slow, but you'll get a better temp reading quicker than if you were using Tier 1.

To confirm freezing temps, you need to get anything below 0 degrees Celsius. If you go below 1 degree, however, it's likely that the ghost has freezing temps as evidence, but it's safer to make sure with more readings. If it does have the evidence, it will eventually go below 0. If you want to change your readings to Fahrenheit, you can also do so in the settings.

Tier 3

While it works similarly to the Tier 2 thermometer, the Tier 3 thermometer gives the most accurate readings. It also updates every 1.5 seconds, making it the quickest reading you can get on temperatures in the game. You can unlock it at Level 64.

Like with Tier 2, you can hold down the USE button to get live updates, and you're looking for temperatures that go below 0 degrees Celsius to count as freezing temps evidence. Remember that you need to take your readings in the ghost room for it to be most effective.

How To Find The Ghost Room Using A Thermometer

If you're trying to find the ghost room, you preferably need Tier 2 or 3 thermometers. You can technically use the Tier 1 thermometer as well, but it updates so slowly and sporadically that you're going to have a much tougher time with it.

So, now that you have your equipment, you need to first make sure the breaker is on. If it's off, you will struggle to find the ghost room, because the entire building will be cold. Having the breaker on activates the heating and will give you a much clearer indication of where the ghost room is. If you're playing on Amateur, the breaker will automatically be on, but on higher difficulties, you need to find it and manually switch it on yourself.

Once this condition is met, grab your thermometer and start taking readings in all the rooms in the building. You'll know where the ghost is when the temperature is significantly lower than in any other room. It doesn't even have to be close to freezing, if the room temp is 10 degrees, but the rest of the building is 20 degrees, you've likely found it. You can also look for where you see breath coming out of your character, as this only really happens if you're in the ghost room or near the ghost.

Breath doesn't appear consistently, but you can spot it easily because it will appear on your screen and look like a small cloud of smoke. Just remember that breath alone isn't good enough to identify the ghost room, because it can appear wherever a room is colder, and ghosts tend to roam in Phasmophobia.
