The faction system in Dune: Awakening lets players wage war on Arrakis under the banners of either the Atreides or the Harkonnen. This plays a big part in the PvP and PvE endgame experience, and if you think you joined the wrong faction, you'll be glad to know that treachery is very much an option.
Betrayal carries a heavy weight, and if you want to get faction-specific perks in Dune: Awakening, you'll want to make sure you're on the right team. Still, if you ever have a change of heart, you can leave your current faction in favor of the other by doing the following steps.
The Unwritten Rules of Dune: Awakening Explained
Before setting out into the unforgiving desert of Arrakis in Dune: Awakening, there are several unwritten rules players should become familiar with.
How to Change Factions in Dune: Awakening
Players who want to switch their allegiance to the opposing faction will need to go to Anvil Outpost in Vermillius Gap and speak with the faction representatives there. Harko's rep is Maxim Kazmir, while the Atreides rep is Lt. Tolliver.
Faction Betrayal Consequences in Dune: Awakening
If you speak with either one of them after becoming an official faction member, you'll get a dialogue option that will let you betray your current faction. Selecting that option will present you with a warning message. Betraying a faction comes with the following consequences:
- Traitors will no longer be allowed to join the faction they betrayed again.
- Traitors will not be allowed inside the betrayed faction's territories.
- Traitors will be kicked out of faction-aligned guilds.
- All contracts related to the betrayed faction will be automatically canceled.
If all you're concerned about are the cosmetic items for weapons, armor, vehicles, and faction-based building sets, you'll be glad to know that you can still purchase an opposing faction's cosmetics from traders in your current faction's capital city. For Atreides players, speak to one of the NPCs at the Scrap Trader in Arrakeen. Meanwhile, Harkonnen players should go to the Weapons Vendor in Harko Village.
Alternate Faction Switch NPCs
If Kazmir or Tolliver aren't offering you the option to betray your faction in Dune: Awakening, try visiting either of the following NPCs:
- If switching from Atreides to Harkonnen, talk to Piter de Vries. He's at Harko's landing zone, right across the Harko faction vendor.
- If switching from Harkonnen to Atreides, speak with Thufir Hawat at the opposite side of Arrakeen, near the Ornithopter landing zones.
It's unclear why there are two different sets of NPCs needed to start betrayal quests, though the reason for this may be related to the player's standing with their current faction. We can confirm that betrayal quests can be started at Anvil Outpost if your faction standing is at level 2. Conversely, Piter de Vries doesn't offer any betrayal options if you speak with him as a level 2 Atreides member.
