Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is a single-player story and experience, with you being the only player actually in your game ever. That being said, there are lots of online elements that benefit players who do choose to play online, ranging from interacting with structures built by other players to even just simple messages.
Signs can be left on just about any flat surface Sam can comfortably stand on, and can help connect players despite them never actually seeing each other. While Signs have a deeper meaning in the game's themes of connecting to others you can't see, they can also just be fun ways of communicating with other players; here's how to leave your own.

Cargo in Death Stranding 2 is very valuable, but sometimes there are benefits to setting it down; here's how to take off your backpack.
How to Place Signs in Death Stranding 2: On The Beach
You can place a sign just about anywhere on a flat surface, even if it has an incline or not. To place a Sign, hold down on the D-Pad to open up the sign menu and choose which icon you want to place down. Signs are really only icons chosen from a set list, that are placed exactly where Sam is standing at the time of opening the menu.
With the menu open, use the right joystick to hover over which type of icon you want to use, then use R1 and L1 to decide which icon you want to place from that group. You can place as many signs as you'd like, with each one showing your player ID and Porter title to anyone who gets close to it.
Signs can also be deleted by standing near them and holding the menu button.

What Do Signs Do in Death Stranding 2: On The Beach?
Overall, Signs aren't a major system that offers any real changes to the gameplay of Death Stranding 2. That being said, they do help create a sense of connection among players that closely matches the themes of the game. Signs can help other players out by marking safe spots, indicating dangers, or even just a congratulatory message after beating a boss.
You can like other Signs and also have your own Signs liked, which affects the overall visibility of that sign. The more likes a Sign gets, the more players that sign will appear for. When you first place a sign, it will only appear in a few players' worlds, and getting more likes will expand that net and have it appear in more players' worlds.
Can You Check Likes On Your Signs?
Unfortunately, you can't check the likes of an individual Sign from a distance, but if you find the Sign in your world, you can see how many likes it has. Outside of that option, you can check the Social Strand Service and go to Gameplay Statistics to see how many likes you've gotten total, though it won't break it down by Sign.
