Nicktoons and the Dice of Destiny's Boss Fights Explained
The Choice of Bosses in Dice of Destiny
There's been a great deal of variety across the long list of Nickelodeon crossover games, and this extends to boss battles. In the games suited to boss fights, such as the Nicktoons Unite! Series, there's little consistency—save for the characters chosen. Older Nicktoons games repeatedly chose from a relatively short list of villains, such as Plankton and Vlad Plasmius, but it seems as if this is a trend Dice of Destiny will be breaking.
In the heyday of Nicktoons licensed crossover games, the cartoon landscape was far different. SpongeBob, Danny Phantom, Timmy Turner, and Jimmy Neutron were everywhere back then, whereas today, SpongeBob is the only one to have retained this popularity (though Danny Phantom and Fairly Oddparents are finally getting more representation in Dice of Destiny). It seems that Nickelodeon is making a big push to place SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at the front of the Nicktoons brand—evident with both Dice of Destiny's box art and the Nickelodeon push in Sonic Racing: Crossworlds.
Azula from Avatar: The Last Airbender is a key example of this, but all three of the Flame Fatales—who all seem to be key bosses in-game—show a different facet of Nicktoon identity. Azula could represent part of what Nickelodeon wants to push in the modern day, with Avatar being perhaps the network's most acclaimed show, and one that happens to have heaps of new material on the horizon. Meanwhile, Ember is indicative of the classic early 2000s Nicktoons. Angelica, on the other hand, is representative of truly classic Nicktoon material, with Rugrats being an important pioneer in the network's early years.
How Boss Fights Work In Dice of Destiny
When it comes to the mechanics of Dice of Destiny's boss fights, Spinola spoke on the matter of what systems will be at play. Spinola discussed what will make the fights in the title stick out from the rest of its real-time RPG gameplay.
"First, unlike most of the gameplay, the boss fights in NatDoD take place inside enclosed arenas where the players will face the bosses directly. In addition, bosses truly stand out with much higher HP and damage output, striking visual designs, special music tracks, and specialized sets of abilities designed to create a unique experience that requires players to develop a specific strategy to defeat them. In short, we’ve tried to design the boss battles to be epic and challenging moments in the game."
Further, Spinola discussed some specifics of the Flame Fatales' boss fights. They added that "These ladies aren’t playing around, and players should come prepared in terms of level, items, and skill usage. Otherwise, they’ll definitely feel the sting of the webs, the music, and the flames from this elite sisterhood."
