Looting is essential for players who want to progress in SCUM. While one can live off the land with handmade tools and weapons, getting proper gear is still going to be desirable, especially if players plan on taking on other prisoners or raiding high-value POIs. Loot, however, is usually kept inside locked containers, and for that, players will need to learn how to pick locks.

The lockpicking mechanic in SCUM is very similar to the ones found in popular RPGs. However, the requirements here are a little stricter — you can't just get a bobby pin and expect to pick everything open immediately. If you want to start getting better loot, here's a quick guide on how to open locks with lockpicks and other tools.

How to Open Locks in SCUM

SCUM Lockpick interface

To open locks, players will first need two things: a lockpick and a screwdriver. Players can craft Improvised Lockpicks using either Bobby Pins or Safety Pins, though real lockpicks can also be found while exploring the island. Improvised Lockpicks break faster compared to Advanced Lockpicks, but they're easier to get (if you can find enough pins).

As for the lockpicking minigame, it's quite simple. Adjust your lockpick's position using your mouse, then press and hold F to start turning the lock with your screwdriver. Your goal here is to find a sweet spot on the lock that will let you turn the screwdriver all the way until the lock opens. This is mostly a trial-and-error process, so make sure to bring plenty of lockpicks.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when picking locks:

  • Failing a lock with a zapper attached will reduce your health
  • Wearing rubber gloves will prevent damage from lock zappers
  • Wearing thick gloves will make lockpicking more difficult
  • Lockpicks are consumed after use
  • You have a limited time to pick a lock

Having a high Thievery skill will make lockpicking easier. However, expect Silver and Gold locks to still pose a challenge.

Alternate Method

If you don't have any lockpicks, or if you can't pick a lock open because it's too hard, then you can always use a Crowbar to force a lock open. To do this, equip a Crowbar in your hands, then press F on the container you want to open.

Prying a container open with a Crowbar is much slower than using lockpicks. More importantly, it is also very noisy. This could attract nearby Puppets and players, so make sure that the surrounding area is clear before you attempt to use a Crowbar.

Dial and Digital Locks

Dial Locks require a three-number code in order to be unlocked, and if you have no way to know what the right combination is, you'll have to manually input numbers in hopes of opening the lock. This process can potentially take minutes, so try to do it in a relatively safe space.

As for digital keypad locks found in bunkers, you'll also need to guess the right code. There are usually three worn-out numbers on these keypads — you need to find the right combination using three numbers. Be careful, you only have a limited time to get the input code, and if the timer runs out, an alarm will sound.
