Picking locks is one of the best ways to get rare resources and powerful weapons in Dying Light: The Beast. It's also required if you're going to advance through the main questline, so knowing how to crack open doors on the first time of asking, and how to get more lockpicks in case things don't go to plan is particularly important. In this guide, I'll explain everything you need to know about lockpicking in Dying Light: The Beast, so a locked door will never stand in your way of getting the best loot in the decaying world.

How to Pick Locks in Dying Light: The Beast

Lockpicking in Dying Light: The Beast will feel familiar to those who have played other games in the series, and other titles like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, or Fallout 4 before. You want to move the left analog stick to find the right angle with your pick, and then slowly nudge the right analog stick to 'test' the lock.

Each lock has a specific point that will cause it to open. On easy and medium-level locks, this sweet spot is much larger and easier to find, but on harder locks you'll need to be more precise. If you try to open the lock when you've not got your pick in the right position, you'll break the lockpick and need to use another one.

The best way to avoid breaking locks and improve your success rate with lockpicking is to take it slow. Try a few different areas to each of the extremities of range you can move your lock, so all the way over to the left or right, and once in the middle. Very slightly move the right analog stick and feel out for any vibrations on your controller or resistance to the movement. If you feel any, release the right analog stick and try a different position.

The closer you are to finding the right spot with your pick, the longer it'll take when moving the right analog stick to feel that resistance, so let this guide your adjustments of the pick.

How to Get More Lockpicks in Dying Light: The Beast

Lockpicks can be crafted at any time by opening the crafting menu, or by visiting a workbench. In this menu, you can find the Lockpick under the 'Gadgets' section of the menus. It costs three Scraps to craft and you'll get one Lockpick in return.

This means you'll never have to worry too much about burning through lockpicks if you come across a particularly challenging lock. Scrap is pretty easy to come by, and because you don't have to be at a workbench to craft them, you can always get more on the fly if you run out midway through a quest or after finding a door you're pretty sure has some great loot behind it.
