Players have a ton of options on how to fight zombies and mercs in Dying Light: The Beast, and while Kyle Crane's new infection-fueled powers are the ones in the spotlight, he can still do most of his old tricks from the original game in the series. This includes a variety of guns and melee weapons, as well as combat techniques like the fan-favorite dropkick and weapon throw.

However, unlike in the first game, throwing melee weapons in Dying Light: The Beast is a bit more confusing to do. The game doesn't tell players how to do it, and if you accidentally did it before, you were probably left wondering what exactly you did to make the weapon throw happen. If that's the case, then here's a quick guide on how you can chuck your blades, sticks, and other implements of gratuitous violence at things.

Much like in Dying Light 2, you can throw weapons in this game by charging up a heavy attack and pressing a separate button. The latter is different depending on what you're using, but for reference, here's what you need to press based on your control input:

  • Mouse/Keyboard: Hold LMB, then press F.
  • Controllers: Hold R2/RT, then click the right thumbstick.

Pressing this buttom combo will cause Kyle to chuck his currently-equipped melee weapon at whatever he is aiming at, and if you're wondering, you cannot throw guns in Dying Light: The Beast. Although, you can throw two-handed weapons like axes and sledgehammers at your enemies.

How to Use Throwables in Dying Light: The Beast

If you want to throw something that's actually meant to be thrown, like frag grenades, molotov cocktails, and throwing knives, you'll need to equip them in your Gadgets slot in the Inventory menu, then ready them by pressing the associated button that's bound to the Gadget slot you used.

On PC, you can cycle between equipped gadgets by pressing the 1 key. Meanwhile, you can do the same on controllers by pressing Left on the D-Pad. Once you've selected the right item, press the Middle Mouse Button or L1/LB on controller to use the gadget. Just keep in mind that most throwables (including throwing knives) cannot be retrieved.

Throwable items may be expendable, but they are very powerful in the right situations. Even the humble Decoy can be a lifesaver if you throw one at the right time. Molotov cocktails are also incredibly cost-efficient, and they're great at dealing damage to stronger targets, but unless you can get a good supply of Rags and Alcohol, you'll be forced to choose between making these or healing items early on in the game.
