Water-type Mudkip is one of the three starter Pokemon in the Hoenn region, and it's arguably one of the more popular choices for beginner trainers. With Pokemon Scarlet & Violet's expansion pass fully accessible, you can find and catch a wild Mudkip in the Indigo Disk DLC... But there's a catch.

Starter Pokemon are already rare, so to get them to appear in Terarium, the setting for Indigo Disk, you will need to expand one of its biomes. Once this is done, you can find Mudkip in the wild. Even if you don't plan to add Mudkip or its evolutions to your party, you'll need to catch them if you want to complete the Blueberry Pokedex.

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet trainers can catch and evolve the Water-type starter Pokemon, Squirtle, in the Indigo Disk, so here's what to know.

Where to Find Mudkip in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet

Coastal Biome in Terarium (3000BP)

pokemon scarlet violet indigo disk mudkip location

Mudkip appears in the Torchlit Cavern of the Coastal Biome in Terarium (Indigo Disk). However, it will only appear if you have contributed 3000BP to the Terarium Club (Coastal Biome). You can contribute BP by accessing the computer in the League Club at Blueberry Academy. To have access to the League Club, you will need to have completed "The Way Home" and the Kitakami/Teal Mask storyline.

You can go to Terarium/play Indigo Disk after completing the main storylines of Scarlet/Violet (ie: Penny, Nemona, and Arven's quests), but you will be locked off from the League Club until you complete "The Way Home." Thus, you should probably be in the postgame before speaking to Director Cyrano at Naranja/Uva Academy.

Blueberry Points, or BP for short, are a currency earned from Blueberry Quests (BBQs). BP can be used to buy evolution items at Blueberry Academy. However, they're better off being contributed to other clubs, as doing so will unlock gameplay features that weren't accessible in Scarlet/Violet's core game or the Teal Mask.

Once you complete your first class in Terarium, you will start getting BBQs. You get three at a time, and when you complete a quest, a new one takes its place. Since the BP rewarded for BBQs can range from double-digits to triple-digits, it's going to take you a while before you can farm up to 3000BP for the Coastal Biome.

How to Get Mudkip without Indigo Disk DLC

Trading or Transferring

pokemon home transfer venusaur to pokemon scarlet

If farming 3000BP is too tedious or if you don't have Scarlet/Violet's expansion pass, you can get Mudkip through trade or transfer. Before you can do either of these, you will need to connect/link your Nintendo Account to buy a Nintendo Online Membership (trade) or link your account to Pokemon HOME (transfer).

Trading for Mudkip

If you have a Nintendo Online Membership and someone you can trade with, then you can get Mudkip by doing the following:

  1. Go into the pause menu (X-button) and tap L-button to Connect to the Internet.
  2. Go into Poke Portal, and choose Union Circle. You can either Form or Join a Group.
  3. Once you have two (or more) people in your Group, you can set out/embark.
  4. When you're in a Union Circle, you can select Link Trade from the Poke Portal menu.
  5. Set Code or Search for a Trading Partner to trade for Mudkip.

Transferring Mudkip

Now that Pokemon Scarlet/Violet has compatibility with Pokemon HOME, you can transfer compatible Pokemon from other games to Scarlet/Violet. Mudkip can be caught in the following:

  • Pokemon Sword & Shield (Crown Tundra DLC): You can get a rental Marshtomp at the Dynamax Adventures. Keep this Marshtomp to the end of the map, and you can choose to take it with you. Breed it to get a Mudkip Egg, then hatch the Egg to get Mudkip. Reminder: Pokemon Eggs can't be transferred in Pokemon HOME.
  • Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: Get the National Dex, and you will find Mudkip in Fountainspring Cave, Riverbank Cave, and Stillwater Cave hideaways.
  • Pokemon GO: Mudkip and its evolutions occasionally appear in the wild, but their appearance rate is influenced by various factors - including weather.

You will need to place Mudkip from the source game (i.e, SwSh, BDSP) into a PC Box before you can transfer it to Pokemon HOME. If you're transferring from Pokemon GO, you will need to have your GO account linked to your HOME account (on mobile).

  • Transferring Pokemon (Switch games):
    1. Go into Pokemon HOME on the Switch, and open the source game (i.e, SwSh, BDSP).
    2. Move Mudkip from the source game's PC Box to HOME's Basic Box. Save changes and exit.
    3. While still in Pokemon HOME, open Scarlet/Violet, and move Mudkip from the Basic Box to a PC Box. Save changes and exit.
  • Transferring Pokemon (Pokemon GO):
    1. Go into Settings on the Pokemon GO map. (Select the Poke Ball icon)
    2. Choose Connected Devices and Services, then choose Pokemon HOME.
    3. Choose Transfer Pokemon, and select the one you want to transfer.
    4. Go into Pokemon HOME on the Switch, and select the GO icon with the red notification. This will move transferred Pokemon from Pokemon GO into your HOME Basic Box.
    5. Open Pokemon Scarlet/Violet in HOME, then move the GO Pokemon from Basic Box to PC Box. Save changes and exit.

How to Evolve Mudkip & Marshtomp into Swampert

What Level Does Mudkip Evolve?

pokemon scarlet violet indigo disk swampert

Mudkip evolves into Marshtomp at level 16. When Marshtomp reaches level 36, it can evolve into Swampert. Since the wild Mudkip in Torchlit Cavern are very high-leveled, this only applies to Mudkip you hatch from Eggs or transfer from compatible Pokemon games. To evolve the Mudkips in Terarium, give it one Rare Candy to evolve it into Marshtomp, then one more to evolve it into Swampert.

When Mudkip evolves into Marshtomp, it becomes a Water/Ground-type. This is a good dual-typing since it gives Marshtomp and Swampert immunity to Electric-type attacks, one of Water-type Pokemon's primary weaknesses. On the downside, Water/Ground-type Pokemon have a 4x weakness to Grass-type attacks, so you'll want to keep this in mind when battling.
