Modern Warfare 3 Zombies offers a wide variety of items that players can obtain, many of which can be extracted and stored in the player's stash for future deployments. While many of these items are Schematics, others are strange relics often tied to mission objectives or additional exclusion zones known as Rifts.
Joining the long roster of mysterious items is the Science Journal, a relic that players can begin obtaining after completing the Act 4 Story Mission: Union. Unlike the Giraffe Toy, which players acquire through clear mission objectives, the process for obtaining the Science Journal is more obscure.

How To Get The Science Journal
Contrary to popular belief, players cannot obtain the Science Journal by defeating the Storm Caller. Instead, to acquire the Science Journal, players must eliminate a total of 50 Zombies within the Aether Storm.
The Aether Storm can spawn in various locations, but can always be tracked on the tac map as a large purple-hazardous zone. However, simply showing up unprepared is not advisable, as the Zombies within the Aether Storm are buffed to a tier higher than the zone it occupies. Players should bring a weapon Pack-A-Punched to at least Tier 2 or higher, or a Wonder Weapon like the Scorcher, to increase their chances of success.
Once players have eliminated a total of 50 Zombies within the Aether Storm, a Reward Rift will appear nearby, containing the Science Journal. However, in its initial state, the Science Journal is relatively useless and must be upgraded before it can be used for its intended purpose.
The Science Journal can be extracted and stored within the player's backpack or Acquisition Stash, allowing them to take it into another match.
Modern Warfare 3: Where to Find Mimics in Zombies
Mimics can be hard to find in Modern Warfare 3 Zombies, but there are some ways to make the search for these monsters a little easier.
How To Upgrade The Science Journal
Now that players have secured the Science Journal, they can progress to the Tier 3 Zone to upgrade it. The specific location is the western side of Old Town (F4 on the tac map). Here, players will need to locate a triangle on the ground, stand on it, and shoot three purple runes, each visible from the triangle's position.
If the three purple runes do not appear in this location, then another player has, unfortunately, already activated them. This will mean that players will have to try again in a separate deployment.
Once players have completed this step, a much larger triangle will appear towards a building to the east. From here, progress north, ignoring the two bridges leading to the triangle, and instead head atop the stone structure overlooking the staircase to the Pack-A-Punch. From this vantage point, look towards the triangle.
As they do, a ritual will begin, spawning both a soul box and an area of effect around the player. Endless waves of Zombies will start spawning, and players must eliminate enough within the area of effect to complete the ritual.
While players can leave the stone structure while eliminating Zombies, it’s advisable to stay put. Watch for a prompt that says "perform the summoning" while standing there. When the prompt appears, hold the interact button. Failing to do so will prevent you from acquiring the upgraded Science Journal.
The area of effect will disappear once enough Zombies are killed, and if players manage to begin the summoning, a series of Hellhounds will emerge. Defeating the Byamawl Hellhound boss will trigger a Reward Rift, one which will contain the gold version of the Science Journal.
From here, players can either hold onto the Science Journal to use within the same game, or extract and save it for another match.

How To Use The Science Journal
The Science Journal is one of four items needed to open a Dark Aether Rift Portal (E4 on the tac map) near the Unstable Rift tied to the Story Mission: Union. To use it, players must place the gold variant of the Science Journal onto one of the Rift Pedestals in the area. Additionally, they will need to place a Giraffe Toy, a Laptop with Stickers, and an Imaginary Friend Drawing on the remaining three pedestals to build the Rift Portal.
