Skate has a ton of fun tricks that players can pull off to sharpen their skateboarding skills in the digital streets of San Van. You can practice legendary flips, ollies, rides, and grind tricks straight from Skatepedia, whether it’s to complete quests or just for the thrill. Pumping, on the other hand, isn’t exactly listed in Skatepedia.
Instead, it’s more of a speed-controlling skill that helps you manage momentum on the board. Learning it makes a big difference, especially when rolling through bowls or ramps without wiping out or going airborne unexpectedly. This guide covers how you can pump easily in Skate 4.
How to Pump in Skate 4
Since pumping works best on curvy paths or steep surfaces, the first step is finding a spot in San Van that fits. If you’re just starting out and haven’t finished the tutorial, the starting lobby is a great place to practice. But if you’re stuck in an area without proper ramps, you can build your own setup. Open the Object Browser (press the right button on the d-pad) and drop a few Quarter Pipe, M Wood pieces in front and back to create a halfpipe.
Once your spot is ready, you can start pumping. All you need to do for pumping in Skate 4 is press your push forward button right as you hit the middle of the pipe. This will help you gain and keep your speed. Timing is everything; pushing forward too early sends you flying off the rollers, too late flattens your motion. Hitting the center is the ideal sweet spot.
For smoother rides, especially when crossing humps at speed, head into the settings and turn on Anti-Pumping (found under Trick Toggles). As you practice, the game will let you know if your pump was clean or sketchy with a little note at the bottom right of the screen.
Best Settings To Pump in Skate 4
If riding transitions manually feels tricky, the game thankfully offers a few assist options. By toggling and adjusting some settings, you can pump in Skate 4 without worrying about precise timing. Here’s a quick overview:
- Vert Pump Assist: 50
- Enable Semi-Auto Pumping: On
- Forward to Pump: On
- Anti-Pumping: On
These options make it easier to hold speed along slopes without much effort. You’ll find them in the Gameplay menu under tabs like Controls, Assists, Trick Toggles, and more. Bumping Vert Pump Assist up to 100 gives you even greater pumping power.
