How Does Save System Work in Black Myth: Wukong

Unlike most modern AAA games, Black Myth: Wukong does not offer a manual save feature, even when quitting to the main menu or desktop. The only saving method available is through autosave, but there is a way to trigger it when you want, sort of.

Throughout your journey in this world inspired by Journey to the West, you'll frequently encounter Keeper’s Shrines. These function similarly to the Site of Grace in Elden Ring. Simply interact with them, and your progress will be saved.

When you interact with a Keeper’s Shrine for the first time, the Destined One will pluck out one of his hairs and offer it to the shrine, activating it. Once a shrine is activated, later interactions won't trigger this animation.

Once you interact with a Shrine (whether new or previously activated), you'll notice a lightning icon at the top right of the screen. This indicates that your game is being saved. It's important not to shut down your game during this process, as doing so could corrupt your save file.
Keeper’s Shrines aren't the only way to save your progress. The game will also automatically save after key moments in the story, such as defeating a boss. The lightning icon will appear during these autosaves as well.
Additionally, when you quit the game properly, your progress is saved, but when you resume, you'll spawn at the last Keeper’s Shrine you visited. The save file also displays the time of the last save, allowing you to double-check that your progress has been recorded.

You do not have to rest at a Keeper’s Shrine to save your progress; simply interacting with it will automatically save your game.

You CANNOT turn off the autosave feature. However, you can delete the autosave from the main menu if you want. The game provides a total of ten autosave slots for the player.

When you die, you'll respawn at the last Keeper’s Shrine without losing any items or XP. In this way, Black Myth: Wukong is slightly less punishing than FromSoftware games, where death can result in the loss of Souls or Runes.

Keeper’s Shrines have various functions in Black Myth: Wukong. You can use them to rest, which respawns all enemies. They also serve as fast travel points, allowing you to teleport to previously activated shrines. Additionally, you can use them to purchase or sell items.
