Weapons, or Armaments as they are called in Elden Ring Nightreign, are the backbone of a player’s journey through Limveld. Whether it is dishing out damage to a powerful boss or clearing out a swarm of enemies, a strong and reliable weapon can often be the difference between victory and death. As the game’s structure revolves around gaining strength across a two-day expedition, upgrading your preferred weapon becomes a critical step toward survival and success.

Weapon upgrading in the game is not overly complex, but there are a few key details players need to understand. This guide explains everything players need to know about upgrading weapons and where to locate the materials required to take your gear from basic to Legendary during your expeditions in Elden Ring Nightreign.

How to Upgrade Weapons In Elden Ring Nightreign

To upgrade your weapon, you must locate the Ghostly Merchants during your expeditions. These merchants are typically found near forts or townships and always have a Smithing Table positioned beside them, which you can use to enhance your weapon to the next level of rarity. There are only four rarities available in the game:

  • Common
  • Uncommon
  • Rare
  • Legendary

Upgrading weapons requires Smithing Stones, which can be acquired through various means. Keep in mind that on Day 3, you are teleported to the Spirit Shelter, where you can interact with the Smithing Table for the final time before confronting the Nightlord of the expedition.

How to Upgrade Weapons In Elden Ring Nightreign 3

After completing the first expedition, players will receive a pop-up notification stating that World Events—referred to as The Shifting Earth—are now active and will alter a portion of the map. One such event is The Crater, a volcanic fissure teeming with Magma Wyrms, Fire Monks, and other flame-based foes. Within this crater is a Smithing Table you can interact with to instantly upgrade your weapon to Legendary Rarity.

This also eliminates the minimum stat requirement on the weapon, allowing you to wield it immediately.

Where To Find Smithing Stones In Elden Ring Nightreign

Smithing Stones, although a rare material, can be found with relative ease if you know where to look. One of the simplest ways to acquire them is by purchasing directly from a Ghostly Merchant. You can buy the upgrade material and immediately upgrade your weapon at the nearby Smithing Table. However, the merchant only offers Smithing Stone [1], meaning you’ll still need to search for Smithing Stone [2] to further increase your weapon’s rarity.

Glowing Cracked Statue s are another reliable source of upgrade materials, but the challenge lies in breaking them—this can only be done by luring an enemy or boss to attack it, or by using your Ultimate Art.

Keep in mind that certain characters, such as Duchess and Revenant, cannot break these statues with their Ultimates.

The most consistent method of obtaining Smithing Stones [2] is by visiting a Tunnel, marked on the map with a mine symbol. Once inside, head to the lower levels, where you’ll typically encounter a Troll. Defeat the Troll to receive a guaranteed Smithing Stone [2] as a reward. Additionally, nearby side rooms often contain chests that drop Smithing Stone [1], helping you conserve the Runes you'd otherwise spend purchasing them from merchants.
