In Hytale, Essence of Life can be obtained as a by-product when harvesting crops. Both farm-grown crops and those found in the wild will yield Essence of Life when collected. Additionally, harvested crops can be directly converted into Essence of Life at a Farmer’s Workbench via the Essence of Life tab.

How to Farm Essence of Life in Hytale
Harvesting wild crops to get Essence of Life works for the very early stages of progression in Hytale. However, as the demands for more Essence of Life increase, simply finding some while out on resource runs becomes inefficient. The best way to farm Essence of Life is by planting, growing, and harvesting crops yourself.
At the start, players only have access to Wheat and Lettuce seeds at a Tier 1 Farmer’s Workbench. Using this as a starting point, you can create a permanent, regrowing Essence of Life farm using Eternal Seeds.
- Collect Essence of Life from wild crops until you have a small stockpile.
- Craft Lettuce and Wheat Seed Bags at a Farmer’s Workbench using the gathered Essence of Life and plant both crops.
- Upgrade the Farmer’s Workbench to Tier 2 using the gathered crops, Essence of Life, and Softwood Logs.
- Collect and register 10 memories at the Heart of Orbis in the Forgotten Temple to unlock the recipe for Lettuce Seed Bag (Eternal) and Wheat Seed Bag (Eternal) at the Tier 2 Farmer’s Workbench.
- Craft Eternal Lettuce Seed Bags and plant them in your farm.
Since these are Eternal Seeds, they will continuously regrow when harvested, giving you a renewable source of Essence of Life.
Each time you harvest a Lettuce crop, you’ll obtain one Lettuce and 1-2 Essence of Life. You can then convert the Lettuce into 3 Essence of Life at the Farmer’s Workbench, for a total of 5 Essence of Life per Lettuce planted.
Lettuce is better for Essence of Life farming than Wheat because it has a better conversion ratio (1:3 instead of 1:1). Later in the game, Aubergine and Pumpkin make for excellent Essence of Life farming crops as well (1:8 ratio).
The Emerald Grove’s Drifting Plains biome and the Howling Sands’s Golden Steppes biome are the best locations to set up a farm.
As you gather more memories, you’ll unlock more Eternal Seed recipes, and you’ll be able to expand your farm with higher-tier crops.
