Born from a bug in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Immortals Fenyx Rising would go on to become of one Ubisoft’s most popular new IPs. The game has been compared to Breath of the Wild, and while there are stark contrasts, the comparisons themselves are not bad. Immortals Fenyx Rising carved its own unique identity, in the grand scheme of things.
A sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising has been rumored for some time now, but recently, insider Jeff Grubb revealed a few key details about the project. Although his information is almost always reliable, fans should keep in mind that nothing has been confirmed by Ubisoft and should therefore be taken with a grain of salt.
This sequel, Jeff Grubb says, is more of a spin-off, set in a Polynesian setting. This opens a ton of doors for the game, as this mythology is not as popular in video games as Norse or Greek mythology. What’s more, the focus on gods in mythology is returning, as Grubb says the god narrator will return. Polynesian Gods in Immortals Fenyx Rising’s next game opens a ton of doors for the narrative, but gameplay-wise, there is one interesting possibility based on this mythology.
Immortals Fenyx Rising Sequel and Animal Spirits
Most mythologies have some hierarchy of gods, and despite how vast Polynesian mythology is, this is true for it too. There is one concept known as the ‘aumakua, which are guardian spirits, family gods, or deified ancestors that take on physical forms such as spirit vehicles. A family can have one ‘aumakua, but some have many more.
Immortals Fenyx Rising would do well to work these into its gameplay, allowing the new protagonist (as Fenyx is most likely to be replaced) to have many of these ‘aumakua for combat and exploration possibilities. These ‘aumakua can manifest as sharks, birds, owls, octopus, or any number of animals, while it’s also possible they take on objects like plants or rocks.
It would be interesting if the new protagonist unlocked these as abilities, such as the ability to whip water or bite like a shark, to fly like birds, or to extend reach with an octopus tentacle. Perhaps the weapon could be something made or bone or rock and is, itself, a living breathing weapon. The concept of an intelligent spirit-oriented weapon isn’t new in gaming, but it would help bring out that Polynesian influence on this Immortals Fenyx Rising follow-up game.
It opens a ton of doors if it takes a deified ancestor approach too, but in terms of gameplay and narrative, a Polynesian-set Immortals game would be something unique and new in the industry. It might just be what Ubisoft needs in its catalog too.
An Immortals Fenyx Rising sequel is reportedly in development.
