This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Indiana Jones: The Order of Giants and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood.
In classic franchise fashion, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle's story takes fans on a truly wild ride around the globe. The 2024 game begins with an oddly tall man stealing a cat mummy from Indiana Jones' place of work, Marshall College. Of course, Indy gives chase, resulting in an adventure that takes him to the Vatican, Egypt, Shanghai, Thailand, Iraq, and eventually even sees him coming face to face with Noah's Ark.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle's The Order of Giants DLC doesn't tell quite as grand of a tale with its much shorter 3–4 hour runtime, but its story is no less thrilling. Set during the Vatican portion of Indy's Great Circle adventure, The Order of Giants sees the hero exploring the sewers beneath the city of Rome. And by the time credits roll on the DLC, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood fans might find themselves pointing at the screen like they're Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Indiana Jones: The Order of Giants DLC Features an Assassin's Creed Brotherhood-Like Cult
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood's Followers of Romulus Cult Explained
One of the most memorable pieces of optional content in any Assassin's Creed game, AC Brotherhood is home to six secret lairs that take protagonist Ezio Auditore da Firenze deep below Rome's busy streets. In this claustrophobic network of catacombs, ancient drainage systems, and the remains of mysterious temples, players discover the Followers of Romulus, a small army of wolf-pelt-wearing, axe-wielding warriors operating secretly underground.
Like their name implies, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood's Followers of Romulus are worshipers of Romulus, said to be the founder and first ruler of Rome. According to myth, Romulus and his brother Remus were sons of the Roman god of war, Mars, who were raised by a pack of wolves after being left for dead in the wild as infants.
AC Brotherhood's Followers of Romulus wholeheartedly believe that the first ruler of Rome was indeed a god, and that his upbringing turned him into a sort of half-man, half-wolf, hence why the group members adorn themselves with wolf pelts.
If I Had a Nickel For Every Cult Hiding Under Rome...
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle's The Order of Giants DLC also sees its protagonist exploring the vast network of underground passages underneath the city of Rome. Towards the end of the DLC, Indy stumbles upon a red-robed, mask-wearing gang of cultists hiding in the city's sewers.
This menacing group is quickly revealed to be a modern (1937) revival of the ancient Cult of Mithras. Much like its real-world counterpart from 1st to 4th century AD, Indiana Jones: The Order of Giants' Cult of Mithras worships the eponymous Roman/Iranian god of justice and war. This revived, fictional version of the cult has a particular fascination with the story of Mithras killing a sacred bull, which was often used as the primary symbol of the ancient real-world religion.
Though Assassin's Creed Brotherhood's Followers of Romulus and Indiana Jones: The Order of Giants' Cult of Mithras believe in different deities and wear very different ritualistic outfits, they're both secret cults hiding underneath Rome, worshiping ancient Roman figures, and putting animal-related imagery at the forefront. The Order of Giants' Cult of Mithras is even introduced in a similar way to AC Brotherhood's Followers of Romulus, with players being able to spot cult members lurking in the shadows and darting past locked gates before their full reveal.
Both cults even have their own special historical dagger, with the Followers of Romulus having the Dagger of Brutus, and Indiana Jones: The Order of Giants' cult having the Dagger of Mithras.
