Coming from many of the same developers behind the surprisingly good Chronicles of Riddick tie-in game, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle puts weighty first-person melee combat at the forefront of its gameplay loop. Players can block oncoming punches, counter with their own flurry of blows, and of course, use I ndy's trusty whip to yank away weapons and trip up enemies.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle's combat really captures the essence of Indy's untrained, flying-by-the-seat-of-his-pants fighting style. But while combat is a core component of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle's gameplay loop, the hero's greatest weapon doesn't actually have anything to do with violence, and the recently released The Order of Giants DLC understands this completely.

Indiana Jones' Best Weapon Isn't His Whip, It's His Brain

Indiana Jones isn't afraid to get into his fair share of fist fights, use his revolver to shoot a bad guy, or use his whip to knock the gun out of a goon's hand. But his greatest weapon against the forces of evil is his intellect and unique expertise.

Though it's often hidden behind his cocky and roguish facade, Indy is one of the most intelligent action movie protagonists of all time. He knows countless languages, many of which have been "dead" for centuries. He has a deep knowledge of just about every mythology and ancient civilization known to man. And he frequently applies all of those traits to solve a variety of challenges in his path.

Indy's intellect and application are shown throughout the franchise, but some of the best examples come towards the end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. With his father lying mortally wounded on the ground, and a drink from the Holy Grail being the only thing that can save him, Indy sets off to complete the trials of the Crusader Knight.

Despite the pressure of his father's life on his shoulders, Indy remains cool-headed, and reads the clue his father wrote about the first trial: "Only the penitent man will pass." Indy uses his knowledge of religious scripture to avoid the lethal trap, kneeling and rolling out of the way of two saw blades.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle's base game routinely spotlights the eponymous hero's expertise and wide breadth of knowledge. He deciphers ancient Adamic texts throughout the game, and uses them to complete a variety of historical puzzles, most of which players themselves get a chance to solve, really cementing the feeling that they're embodying this iconic pop-culture character.

Indiana Jones: The Order of Giants Doesn't Forget Indy's Best Power

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle's The Order of Giants DLC continues to highlight this often overlooked aspect of the beloved character. The main story of the DLC revolves around Indy unraveling the mysteries behind the Nephilim Order tombs hidden beneath Rome. The first half of the DLC sees him collecting notes on ancient Crusaders and "Monsters of Crete," and players are treated to a few voicelines that hint at Indy's wider knowledge of Christianity and Greek mythology.

Halfway through the Order of Giants DLC, Indy presents his findings to Father Ricci, the Vatican priest who asked for his help uncovering the Nephilim's mysteries. What follows is a fun, brief cinematic montage that shows Indy putting on his professor glasses and scouring through old books to find the potential location of the Giants' tombs. Of course, he figures it out quickly, using his knowledge of Ancient Greek to determine that the Giants must have been buried in Rome's Cloaca Maxima.

Indiana Jones: The Order of Giants is also home to some of the game's best puzzles, which, again, put Indy's intelligence and expertise at the forefront of the game.
