- Concerns about AI replacing voice actors have become a hot topic in the gaming industry.
Harrison Ford has once again complimented Troy Baker for his performance in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, claiming that the actor's work is proof that AI isn’t necessary to replicate an iconic voice. Veteran voice actor Troy Baker stepped in for Harrison Ford as Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which launched on Xbox Series X/S consoles and PC back in December 2024. Baker almost didn’t get the role, as Bethesda head Todd Howard needed to be convinced by the rest of the development team to cast him following a series of blind tests.
Troy Baker did get to play the legendary treasure hunter in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle though, earning high praise due to his near spot-on impression of Harrison Ford after fully committing himself to channeling the famed actor in one of his most beloved roles. Even the original Indiana Jones himself acknowledged Baker’s work at The Game Awards 2024, where Harrison Ford, Todd Howard, and Troy Baker presented the award for Best Performance. While Baker himself wasn’t nominated, his performance in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle left a mark on fans all the same.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Passes Impressive Player Count Milestone
Following its release in late 2024, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is continuing to see incredible success, breaking a new player count record.
Harrison Ford had even more kind things to say about Troy Baker in a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, in which he discussed Indiana Jones and the Great Circle among other topics. In a snippet shared by Culture Crave, Ford described Baker’s performance in Indiana Jones as “brilliant” and pointed to it as proof that AI isn’t needed to recreate a famous voice like his. “You don’t need artificial intelligence to steal my soul,” Ford stated. “You can already do it for nickels and dimes with good ideas and talent. He did a brilliant job and it didn’t take AI to do it.”
Harrison Ford Praises Troy Baker’s Indiana Jones Performance
Ford’s comments about AI are a comment sentiment among the acting community, especially when it comes to video games. Veteran voice actors like Jennifer Hale and David Hayter have spoken out against the use of generative AI to replicate their voices in the past, and these concerns were a factor in SAG-AFTRA going on strike against several noted developers last summer.
You don’t need artificial intelligence to steal my soul. You can already do it for nickels and dimes with good ideas and talent. [Troy Baker] did a brilliant job and it didn’t take AI to do it.
Harrison Ford will soon add another iconic franchise to his belt, as he will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as President Thunderbolt Ross/Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World on February 14. As for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, the game is set to launch on PlayStation 5 sometime during 2025’s first two fiscal quarters, meaning it might not be long before gamers who missed out on the Xbox and PC launches get to hear Troy Baker’s take on the fedora-wearing historian who Harrison Ford first embodied on the silver screen.
