It’s thanks to the arrival of Supergirl as a new character in Injustice 2 that Superman and his One Earth Regime has got a chance to rise again despite the interference of Batman and his Insurgency in the first game. Coming alongside Supergirl is the threat of the mysterious Brainiac, an alien entity hell-bent on ruling the world. With these new factors in mind, Injustice 2 brings a whole of excitement to fighting game fans, especially in terms of the sheer level of content they can explore.
And what’s a modern action title without its fair share of DLCs and microtransactions? In the case of Injustice 2, fans have Source Crystals as an alternative form of currency. With this premium currency, fans can purchase a myriad of exclusive content, and may even accelerate their progress - allowing them to level up characters, get special costumes, and other knick-knacks. Just how could players maximize their Source Crystams and acquire them quickly?
What Are Source Crystals?
It’s not uncommon for a game like Injustice 2 to feature Premium Currency, especially as a way to earn profit through continuous playtime and as an option for players to be able to quickly earn in-game cosmetics. As with other games, Source Crystals are also free to earn for players who are hardworking enough to constantly play the game, with or without using Injustice 2 super moves.
What’s interesting here is the naming convention used for this currency in particular. Source Crystals may be a play on the concept of the Source and the Source Wall. In DC Comics, the Source is the literal source of all creation, and is the primordial presence through which the Multiverse has sprung forth. At the edge of the Multiverse protectign the Source is the unbreachable Source Wall, where all who dared pass through become one with the wall as Promethean Giants.
Why Get Source Crystals?
Serving as the premium currency throughout the gameplay of Injustice 2, it makes sense for players to think about acquiring them as often as possible. However, perhaps more important for the Injustice 2 enjoyer is to understand what makes Source Crystals so relevant in the first place. At its core, Source Crystals are primarily used for the following:
- Acquiring Cosmetics: The core functionality of Source Crystals is to purchase cosmetics for characters, primarily the more expensive Premiere Skins and Alternate Colors, which can complement Injustice 2 Gear.
- Instant Levels: When players get a character to Level 20, players can also use Source Crystals to boost the levels of characters to Level 20 immediately. However, considering how difficult it is to earn Source Crystals consistently, this is not an ideal spending option.
Earn Source Crystals: Daily Challenges
Similar to other persistent video game titles, Injustice 2 features a gameplay option where players can tune in daily to accomplish Daily Challenges and receive various rewards while using Injustice 2 characters like Superman with good Gear. Luckily for players, most Daily Challenges can be accomplished in just an hour or two of focused play. However, what’s more, impressive is how Daily Challenges may pave the way to Source Crystal rewards. Given its nature as a premium currency, it’s pretty rare to see a Daily Challenge focusing solely on giving Source Crystals as a reward.
Earn Source Crystals: The Multiverse
Another unique way for players to earn Source Crystals is to try their hand in the Multiverse gameplay mode. Contrary to the Story Mode, the Multiverse is sort of a mega-arcade mode where random arcade ladders spring forth in the form of alternate universes, a play on the DC Multiverse concept.
Visually-speaking, these arcade ladders are alternate timelines with different versions of events and even Injustice 2 characters. In terms of gameplay, these arcade ladders have specific premises and conditions that players have to follow in order to participate. These include selecting specific characters, certain characters being chosen to help the player, or doing specific tasks. Aside from potentially earning Gear and EXP, Source Crystals may be rewarded in the Multiverse.
Earn Source Crystals: Accomplish Tasks
Similar to other games, Injustice 2 gameplay does feature a rewards system where players are compensated for completing certain tasks throughout their gameplay. While rewards obtained by completing these rewards may vary, some of these tasks actually reward players Source Crystals, especially for tasks related to Gear. This seems to incentivize the new Gear feature in the game, which allows players to tinker with their character’s specific stats to transform them into overpowered Injustice 2 units. These specific rewards regarding Gear, although one-time only, include:
- Equipping All Rare Gear to a character: 500 Source Crystals
- Equipping All Epic Gear to a character: 1,000 Source Crystals
Earn Source Crystals: Story Mode
While players who finished Injustice know that stopping Superman’s regime is a canonical part of the story, the first game officially ends with Superman imprisoned and Batman’s Insurgency beginning to repair society. However, Injustice 2 reveals that all isn’t exactly well even after the Man of Steel’s historic defeat. The Story Mode reveals that the Gorilla Grodd has created a new villainous faction called the Society that aims to exploit the world’s vulnerability for a shot at world domination. Not only that, but Superman has a cousin named Kara Zor-El who is supposed to travel with him toward Earth. It’s soon revealed that Kara, rescued and trained by Black Adam, is helping the latter resurrect Superman’s Regime.
With multiple events happening at once, it’s quite a surprise that NetherRealm fits Injustice 2’s story in just 12 Chapters. However, finishing the Story Mode also nets players a high Profile Level and a decent amount of Source Crystals. After concluding Injustice 2’s story, players obtain 4,000 Source Crystals.
Earn Source Crystals: Player Level-Up
One of the best and surefire ways to earn Source Crystals is through levelling up one’s Profile. Not only is this the most convenient, this is also the option where players don’t necessarily have to spend money to do so. Players can find their Profile Level in the Extras area of their Hero Card, or displayed in most instances. Like other reward-based games, the premium currency is rewarded every time players level-up by using a DC Comics character and fighting in the game. However, the Source Crystals earned do scale depending on the level range:
- Level 1 to 19: 100 Source Crystals (per level-up)
- Level 20 to 39: 150 Source Crystals (per level-up)
- Level 40 and above: 200 Source Crystals (per level-up)
Earn Source Crystals: In-Game Store
Players desperate to earn Source Crystals may purchase them from the in-game store. Gamers can head to the Xbox Live Marketplace or the PSN Store to access the premium currency, which players can purchase for real-life money. There are a variety of packages players can purchase, all of which can net them specific amounts of Source Crystals:
- 2,000 Source Crystals: $0.99
- 11,000 Source Crystals: $4.99
- 23,000 Source Crystals: $9.99
- 50,000 Source Crystals: $19.99
- 150,000 Source Crystals: $49.99
Injustice 2 was released on May 11, 2017, for the PS4, Xbox One, Android, iOS, and PC.
