Injustice 3 has yet to be announced, but lovers of NetherRealm Studios' DC-based fighting series will certainly be rejoicing if that announcement ever comes. Players continue to hope for Injustice 3, and while the game has not been officially confirmed, a third entry in the series now seems more likely than ever.
The current CEOs of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, recently revealed that they have been in talks with WB-owned studio NetherRealm, and, while not definitive, that could hint at the existence of Injustice 3. It's been a long eight years since Injustice 2 was released, and the longer NetherRealm waits to make the next entry, the more time the entry will have to spend on recapping the overall story.
Injustice 3: The Case For and Against Gear Returning
Injustice 2's gear system was the source of that game's character customization, but it may not return in the same form in Injustice 3.

The Complex Lore of Injustice Can Be Difficult to Summarize
A lot happened in Injustice: Gods Among Us and Injustice 2. Between the dismantling of Superman's One Earth Regime in the first game and the arrival of The Society and Brainiac in the second, there is a lot to know going into a hypothetical Injustice 3.
Unless NetherRealm has been secretly working on a third Injustice game for quite some time, it may still be years before this next entry arrives. This means that Injustice 3 could release a full decade, or more, after the launch of Injustice 2. Unless a fan replays the Injustice franchise often, they may not remember the story arc in its entirety for that amount of time. While fans could simply replay both games just before the release of Injustice 3, in order to get proper recaps, they may prefer to jump right into the new game instead of spending time rehashing old plot points.
If Gunn and Safran's DC film universe takes off, it could set the stage for Injustice 3 to be greenlit by Warner Bros.
Injustice 3 Can't Dwell On the Past Too Much
The long wait between Injustice 2 and Injustice 3 really puts the writers at NetherRealm in a difficult and interesting position. It's a given that they will want to give players a rundown of what happened in the first and second games, but how the writers go about doing that remains to be seen. There could simply be an option in the game's menu to watch a recap of the most-important events up until that point, though that could make addressing those past events within the story of Injustice 3 feel jarring.
Unless NetherRealm has been secretly working on a third Injustice game for quite some time, it may still be years before this next entry arrives.
Recapping past events is a delicate balancing act, and the long wait between entries could make things especially tricky for Injustice 3. Injustice 3 will have to come out swinging if it wants to make up for so much lost time, and that could make it difficult to give past events the time that is needed.
NetherRealm's Next Move is a Huge Mystery
- A recent NetherRealm job listing was searching for a senior animator to help develop a "story mode campaign."
- This job listing has led to rumors of a new Mortal Kombat 1 expansion.
Since MK1 is NetherRealm's most recent game, and the aforementioned job listing specifies "experience with martial arts/fighting games," it only makes sense for one to assume that the developer is preparing more content for that title. However, the listing could be pointing towards Injustice 3's development. An expansion for MK1 may be more likely, but there is still a chance that Injustice 3 is drawing closer to becoming a reality.
