Robert Kirkman recently discussed his projects and was asked what the Invincible series on Amazon Prime Video meant for the long-gesticulating live-action adaptation of his Image comic, to which his reply was not to worry.

Invincible, the hot superhero deconstruction comic from Kirkman, became a hit animated series on Amazon Prime Video. It tells the story of Mark Grayson as he struggles to deal with being the son of an alien superhero, Omni-Man, who was sent to infiltrate earth and did so by posing as an all-powerful superbeing.

For Kirkman, the man behind The Walking Dead franchise, getting another series off the ground was a no-brainer. However. Invincible being animated was a new direction for the creator, and some fans have been wondering if Invincible's animated form would hinder it from getting the live-action boost. Kirkman told ComicBook, “I think it's safe to say, if anything, the show has just helped that immensely. People are very excited about that movie potential at Universal. So we're riding that excitement and trying to push things forward as quickly as possible."

Amazon, in the quest for content for their streaming service, cornered the market on superhero deconstruction series with their live-action The Tick reboot, the ongoing series adapting Garth Ennis' The Boys (now with a spinoff about the superhero college of The Boys universe titled Gen V) and Invincible, adapting the popular Image Comics series from Kirkman that once again addresses the age-old trope of “What if Superman was evil?” It’s a deep well to mine, with the answer always being, “He’d be a real big jerk.” Now it looks like Universal wants in on the action.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the adapting minds behind AMC's Preacher and producers of fellow Garth Ennis series, The Boys, are set to write the Invincible movie, the pair having a handle on comic books that jump into the subversive end of the pool. Rogen also produces the Amazon series and voices Allen the Alien on the show. Until the news on the movie goes ahead, the next season of the Amazon series is coming, so fans of Invincible should have plenty to tide them over until the that greenlight is granted.

Invincible season 2 is coming to Amazon Prime Video in late 2023.
