Hazelight Studios released its hit offering, It Takes Two, in March 2021. With it came a remarkable story that tasked players with working together in order to progress. While many may think about just going solo, the option to do so is out of the question, as the title is strictly co-op and will not work unless two players are present. Fortunately, only one person needs to purchase a copy, and the other can join for free.

It is important to note that, while the game supports cross-generation, which allows PlayStation 4 & 5 users to play with each other and Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One owners to play together, it does not support crossplay. As such, both players need to be a part of the same ecosystem to play together. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at how to invite friends and how players can experience It Takes Two together.

How To Invite Friends In It Takes Two

There are two official methods that players can use to invite friends and play together in It Takes Two. The first involves couch co-op, where two gamers can play locally on the same device. The second route involves using the Friend’s Pass. Let’s take a look at the procedures involved.

How To Play Couch Co-Op In It Takes Two

Play local: How to invite friends in It Takes Two

No internet connection is required for playing couch co-op in It Takes Two. So, players need to have the game downloaded and installed the first time around only. Once done, the steps to follow are:

  1. Connect two controllers to the system if playing on a console. If on PC, one person will have to use the keyboard and mouse, while the other uses a controller.
  2. Launch the game and click Play Local.
  3. Click Enter on keyboard and A on controller to confirm the input and move ahead to the next screen.
  4. Here, move the input box to Cody or May to select a character to play as.
  5. Once both players have confirmed their choice, the game will start.

One important but disappointing piece of information to note is that players cannot change the splitscreen in It Takes Two, which means they cannot change the sides that May or Cody are on. If they wish to avoid uncomfortable viewing angles, they will have to move to a different area in the room they are playing in. To change the character they were controlling, they will have to save the game, go back to the main menu, and start the process from scratch once again.

This becomes important as both Cody and May come with different abilities and thus go through different sections at various points in the game. This adds much-appreciated replayability to the game, as players can start anew or play whichever chapter they want with the character they didn’t pick the first time around.

How To Use Friend’s Pass In It Takes Two

Friend’s Pass is a great offering for It Takes Two from developer Hazelight Studios as it allows two people to play together while only one has purchased the game. All they need to do is head to the respective platform’s store to download it for free. They will also need to have an account for said app.

Once they’ve purchased the copy for no cost, they need to download it. The subsequent steps to play together are as follows:

  1. The player who owns the game should launch it and click Play Online from the main menu.
  2. Click on Friend’s Pass and click on the second player’s name from the list that pops up.
  3. Once the second player accepts the invite, they will join the host’s online lobby.
  4. Proceed through the same steps of choosing the input device and the characters to control. Once done, start a new game or choose a particular chapter.

Just like in couch co-op games, both players on PC cannot pick controllers or keyboard and mouse; they have to choose one or the other. It is also important to note that, while the host can choose any other person to play with, the player with the Friend’s Pass doesn’t have that option as they only have access to a free copy.

If neither player owns the game, they can still use the Friend’s Pass to play the first chapter as a trial run.

It Takes Two is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
