James Gunn is adding fuel to the fire that is the upcoming third installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Following the success of the first two movies, it's no surprise that fans are anxious to see what Volume 3 has in store for them —and according to Gunn, they can look forward to an exciting ride full of cameos.Guardians of the Galaxy 3 started shooting in late 2021 and is expected to finish later this month. Simultaneously, the cast and crew are also filming an upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special for Disney Plus, which will likely be released in late 2022. Meanwhile, Gunn continues to share hints as to what fans can expect to see in the anticipated project, which will, unfortunately, be the last for the Guardians of the Galaxy team.RELATED: Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Star Karen Gillan Shows Damaged Nebula With New BTS Photo The director recently took to Twitter to reveal that Vol. 3 will feature cameos that will undoubtedly make die-hard fans happy. "Day 29. The Space Cruiser, Rick & Morty’s ship. It lights up. The cart is getting crowded," Gunn tweeted alongside a photo of a desk filled with Rick and Morty figurines. "PS Today we are shooting some wonderful cameos for true Guardians fans. #GotGVol3 #RickandMorty." Gunn didn't explicitly mention which cameos are appearing in the forthcoming film, but the Rick & Morty toys could suggest a bizarre crossover between the Adult Swim show and the Marvel characters audiences have grown to love. The idea doesn't sound too absurd, considering that Gunn has incorporated multiple pop culture references into his previous work. Nevertheless, fans have no choice but to wait for the release of Volume 3 in 2023.

The film will see the Guardians of the Galaxy gang return for one final adventure. It will also revolve around sisters Nebula and Gamora, as well as introduce the character of Adam Warlock, an artificially created human who decides to travel into space after rebelling against his creators. In October 2021, Gunn confirmed via social media that Will Poulter (We Are the Millers, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch) would play Warlock in the new movie.

Although the release of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is over a year away, it's already breaking records. According to Gunn, he heard through Legacy Effects that the film recently broke the world record for "the most makeup appliances created for a single production," a title that was previously held by The Grinch.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.
