For those unaware, James Gunn is an absolute Rick and Morty fan, and nowadays that’s become even more obvious ever since the director started posting some very special gifts he’s been getting on the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 set for the past couple of months.
What is expected to be Gunn's final Guardians of the Galaxy film started filming in February, and shortly after Gunn received a pleasant surprise in the form of a couple of Squanchy and Mr. Meeseeks keychains. With filming for the movie set to carry on until mid-May, Gunn still has just over a month left to find the culprit behind this on-set prank, and his constant updates on Twitter suggest he’s close to finding out who is the Rick and Morty prankster.
The latest example of these very fine gifts is an “Ants In My Eyes Johnson” figurine, the aggressive salesman from Rick and Morty's eighth episode in season one, who can’t see or feel anything, not even his absurdly priced electronics. In this tweet, Gunn also mentions his current prime suspect behind it all, a video assist person named Porkchop, whom he believes to be the perpetrator if not the plan’s mastermind. Just last Friday, Gunn shared that he had noticed an unnamed and still uncredited actor in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 swiftly placing a “Rick King of S**t” for him to find, though that tweet will do more to fire cameo speculation for the movie rather than solve the mystery. One actor who Gunn seems confident doesn’t have anything to do with the whole scheme is Chris Pratt, after the director dismissed his involvement due to his schedule.
Despite his obvious attachment to Rick and Morty and MCU resume, Gunn has distanced himself from any live-action projects that could be lined up in the future for the series, saying he would never touch what he considers to be one of the greatest TV shows of all time, even if offered the chance. Besides the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie, plus this year's Holiday Special, Gunn's pipeline now also includes an eventual second season his very successful adaption of Peacemaker that features much of the same style that’s made him a household name.
Meanwhile, Rick and Morty fans like Gunn also have a ton to look forward to, as the show’s sixth season is rumored to be complete ahead of a possible 2022 release. It will surely draw plenty of eyes after the show raised the stakes in last season’s shocking Rick and Morty finale.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 5, 2023.
