Following Superman's stellar reviews and opening weekend, director and DCU overlord James Gunn has shared a new glimpse of the upcoming Supergirl movie. Superman had a lot of work to do, establishing Gunn's overall live-action DCU and introducing numerous characters beyond the titular hero. Still, the writer and director has continued his track record with superhero cinema, impressing audiences with a timely and classic interpretation of the character that embraces some unique comic elements he infuses with his own. The next movie to debut in the new DCU will be Supergirl.
Supergirl was announced along with numerous other projects in Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU plans. The movie has already finished filming and is said to be inspired by the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book storyline. The movie even shared the same title as the comic until it was recently shortened to just Supergirl. Graig Gillespie, director of I, Tonya and Disney's Cruella, is at the helm of the movie, with a script penned by Ana Nogueira, mainly known as an actor on shows like The Vampire Diaries and Hightown. Milly Alcock is playing Supergirl, with other cast members including David Krumholtz as Zor-El and Jason Momoa as Lobo, making for an inspired recasting of the DCEU's Aquaman.

A new behind-the-scenes video from Supergirl reveals the heroine taking on three armored enemies in an intense, action-filled battle sequence.
With Superman's opening a notable success, Gunn has now taken to X to prepare audiences for the DCU's next film, Supergirl. In a new image shared by the director, he simultaneously hypes the upcoming superhero film while helping to set the tone. As has been previously stated, each project in the DCU will embrace a different tone, and with a simple image, Gunn lets viewers know that the Supergirl movie will have a distinct feel when compared to Superman. Superman Has The DCU Off To An Exciting Start, With Many Unique Projects On The Way
The success of Superman is no small feat. After the spectacular failure of the DCEU, which also kicked off with a Superman film in 2013's Man of Steel, the newly invigorated DCU looks to have a brighter future. Man of Steel had a darker tone, serving as a more divisive installment to begin a franchise. Gunn's Superman is beginning the DCU on a high note, with audiences universally embracing the film and praising the start of an exciting new cinematic universe.
Supergirl is the next planned film in the franchise, currently slated for a June 26, 2026 release. The movie is in post-production now, with other DCU properties in active production, like the Lanterns series, which will see the return of Guy Gardner's Green Lantern following Superman and Peacemaker season 2. The Clayface movie should also begin filming later this year, with Speak No Evil and Eden Lake director James Watkins at the helm. Clayface could also serve as the first drastic tonal shift in the DCU. While many projects are still in early stages, the DCU has many exciting possibilities, and Supergirl is next on the docket.
