- DC Universe is developing major characters from DC Comics, including Batman and Wonder Woman.
James Gunn hasn't given a definite update about Wonder Woman following Gal Gadot's departure until today. Finally, the future of the Princess of the Amazons in the DCU has been addressed.
Gadot's Wonder Woman was among the most successful projects from the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). She debuted as Diana of Themyscira in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and a year later, her solo movie, Wonder Woman, was released. Her debut was well-received, with many approving of her look and performance. She reprised the role in Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) and was supposed to return for a third movie with Patty Jenkins as the director. However, the project was shelved after Gunn and Peter Safran became co-CEOs and co-Chairmen at DC Studios. Henry Cavill also faced the same fate — his next Superman film was canceled, and Gunn cast a younger actor, David Corenswet, as the new Man of Steel in the upcoming Superman movie he directed. Following the move, many wondered what would happen to Gadot's DC character, and Gunn finally gave a promising update.
James Gunn Shares ‘Encouraging’ Update About Wonder Woman For The First Time After Gal Gadot’s Exit
James Gunn has confirmed that they are making progress with DCU’s Wonder Woman reboot.
Gunn recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly and discussed the future of the DC Universe after David Zaslav, the head of Warner Bros. Discovery, previously spoke about their 10-year plan at Warner Bros.' (WB) Q1 2025 earnings call in May. Zaslav mentioned that Gunn and Safran are developing the "major characters" from the DC Comics, particularly Superman, Supergirl, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Corenswet's Superman movie is coming out this year and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, starring Milly Alcock, is set for release next year. As for the other two, DCU is developing a film inspired by the Batman and Son comic and a live-action television series, Paradise Lost. He told EW that the latter is "slow moving, but it's moving" while adding that the Wonder Woma n movie is "being written right now."
The DCU Having A New Wonder Woman Is Much Better Than Having No Wonder Woman At All
This isn't the first time Gunn teased about DCU's Wonder Woman. Last month, another fan asked him for an update about the franchise, and he gave a short but promising statement. The filmmaker made it clear that Wonder Woman was on their radar, but what they had was something "Not to be shared publicly yet." However, he added that it was "encouraging." His latest declaration about Wonder Woman only proves that the female superhero's future under Safran and Gunn's management is bright.
Gunn previously shared their approach with DC Studios regarding developing projects. According to him, nothing is "in production" unless it's been greenlit, and they do not cast on projects that aren't greenlit yet. A project will only be in production once they have a "great" script and are ready to film. With Gunn saying they are working on a Wonder Woman screenplay, the project is expected to be greenlit once the script is ready, and after that, fans are likely to hear news about casting. The next Wonder Woman star has big shoes to fill because Gadot's movies were among the most successful films from the DCEU. Several names have been rumored to be the next Wonder Woman, including Eiza González and Adria Arjona. Moon Knight star May Calamawy also expressed interest in playing the role. For now, fans must wait until DCU officially names its next Diana Prince.
