How To Play Wordle

Wordle is a simple game with simple rules. In order to play, word puzzle fans just need to head over either to the New York Times Games Wordle website or the New York Times Crossword app. There are loads of other Wordles in different places, but this is the original version and the one this article is all about; other versions will most likely have different answers and can have slightly different rules of how to play.

First thing players have to so after getting to the right place is to choose a starting word. Starting Wordle words:

Must be five letters long.
Must be a real word.
Should contain five different common letters.
Cannot be one of the many words removed from Wordle by the New York Times, like offensive words and non-American spellings of words.
Although these can be used as guesses, players should avoid plural nouns ending in S or previous Wordle answers.

Next, type the word into the Wordle website, and press enter. This will cause its letters to change colors, giving players clues to the real answer.

Green letters are correct and in the right place or places in the word.
Yellow letters are right but in the wrong place or places in the word.
Gray letters are incorrect.

Given these hints, players need to keep trying new words and getting new hints to get closer to the answer. They have five total tries to get to it before they lose.
