How To Play Wordle

Wordle is a fairly simple game with only a handful of rules. In order to play, word puzzle fans just need to head to either the New York Times Games Wordle website or the New York Times Crossword app. While there are tons of copycats out there, this one is the original and the subject of this article. Here's how to play:

First, players will need to choose a good starting word. This word:

Must be five letters long.
Must be a real word that isn't a proper noun.
Should not be a previous Wordle answer.
Should not be a plural noun ending in S or ES.
Should contain loads of common letters to Wordle puzzles.
While Wordle answers can have duplicated letters, it's usually best not to start with a word that has duplicated letters in it, like VIVID.
Also, players will want to avoid non-American words, for example: using FIBER instead of FIBRE.
Wordle words around holidays and special events are usually tailored to that holiday; there is now an editor for the game that changes the words to match if there is something happening that day.

After a good starting word is chosen, type it into the site and press enter. The letters will change colors.

Green letters are right.
Gray letters are wrong.
Yellow letters are right but in the wrong place in the word.

Players have six total tries to get to the word of the day before they lose. Puzzle reset daily at midnight.
