Summary

  • Jenna Dewan discussed Bailey and Nolan's adoption plans for The Rookie season 7.
  • The characters face a difficult adoption process in episode 13 but decide to put parenthood on hold.
  • Fans anticipate more drama in season 8 as Bailey and Nolan navigate personal and career challenges.

The Rookie season 7 has been an enjoyable mix of shocking storylines and challenging personal moments for the beloved main characters. As a fan of the ABC procedural, I've always liked watching Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan) and John Nolan's (Nathan Fillion) relationship. I appreciate how shows such as The Rookie and another popular action-packed series, Chicago P.D., show how tough it can be for these strong and confident characters to balance their personal lives with their careers. While Nolan's dedication to doing the right thing makes him a likable character, I think his arc would be much less interesting without his dynamic with clever and quick-witted Bailey.

In a recent interview, Dewan commented on one aspect of Bailey and Nolan's relationship, and it got me thinking about what I hope to see before the end of The Rookie season 7.

Jenna Dewan Discussed Bailey & Nolan's Adoption Plans & I Hope This Storyline Continues By The Rookie Season 7 Finale

Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan) and John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) on The rookie

In an interview with Us Weekly, Jenna Dewan talked about Bailey and Nolan's decision to adopt and whether that would happen in The Rookie season 7.

Dewan said:

“I wouldn’t say it’s off the table just at the moment. I think they realize, ‘Hold on, we have some really intense lives, and I don’t think either of us are really in the position to be taking care of a baby. So we don’t want to bring something into our life that therefore we’re not able to be the most responsible for.’”

She continued:

"They have that recognition of like, ‘timing is everything,’ and maybe right now is not the right time.”

The Rookie season 7, episode 13, "Three Billboards" examines Bailey and Nolan's difficult adoption process, and I want them to get some good news by the end of the season. By the end of the well-done episode, a social worker tells them their lifestyle is too dangerous and challenging for them to get approved. While that might be true, it's a depressing thought. Since The Rookie has always had a light-hearted and optimistic tone, I don't think this resolution makes sense for the series.

By the end of "Three Billboards," the characters decide to put a pause on their hopes to start a family. But what if they don't have to give up? I would be happy if the social worker reconsidered and saw beyond Bailey and Nolan's risky jobs, but I understand that might not happen. While it might not be possible for Bailey and Nolan to adopt a child, I'm wondering if they could become parents another way. Maybe someone from Bailey or Nolan's past comes back into their lives and asks them to take care of a baby or young child. This would likely be a tragic and heartbreaking plotline, but it would also change the couple's lives in many compelling ways. Then, by the time they were ready to formally adopt the child, hopefully, it would be clear that they're caring people who can definitely raise a kid.

Even if The Rookie season 7 doesn't end up with the characters raising a child in some way, it would be interesting to see this plotline continue in season 8. The popular police drama is so enjoyable to watch because, while there are many riveting cases in every The Rookie episode, the show doesn't ignore the personal challenges of the main characters. Considering Bailey and Nolan's struggles, particularly concerning her villain ex-husband Jason Wyler (Steve Kazee), it would be a shame if they never became parents.

What Else Could Happen At The End Of The Rookie Season 7?

Nolan (Nathan Fillion) on The Rookie

There are a few more episodes left of The Rookie's current season, and The Rookie season 7, episode 16 aired last night. Besides possibly seeing Bailey and Nolan continue to discuss parenthood, fans can likely expect more to come from Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neil) and Tim Bradford's (Eric Winter) dramatic relationship.

In an interview with TV Line, showrunner Alexi Hawley explained that fans will find out if Lucy passed her exam to become a sergeant soon. He said:

“We’ll know the answer before the end of the season. And maybe we’ll have a bit of storytelling with that.”

After the memorable moment between Lucy and Tim in The Rookie season 7 episode 15 when she says she forgives him, it's hard for fans not to wish they would get back together by The Rookie season 7 finale. Hopefully, fans will get answers to these questions soon. Even if their relationship status remains a mystery, there's no doubt that season 8 will also feature more action, drama, and Nolan's corny jokes.
