Jujutsu Kaisen Draws a Lot Of Inspiration From Bleach

Gege Is a Huge Bleach Fan

It is no surprise that fans consider Jujutsu Kaisen to be Bleach's successor. After all, the two series hold a lot of similarities. Bleach was a massive series with a lot of its hype reignited recently with the release of the Thousand Year Blood War anime. It has always been pretty big, being a part of the Big 3 anime alongside One Piece and Naruto, although never quite as popular as the other two.

Nevertheless, the influence Bleach has had on many series, especially on Jujutsu Kaisen, is not to be understated, especially since it became one the biggest shonen series of recent years.

Jujutsu Kaisen isn’t purely inspired by Bleach, of course, as fans can also see elements from Naruto and other series, but the Bleach inspirations are definitely strong.

Gege Akutami, the creator of the Jujutsu Kaisen series, is a huge Bleach fan, which makes it all more obvious when seeing the similarities. The biggest similarity that people point out is undoubtedly between Bankai and Domain Expansion. The two concepts work very similarly.

Another huge inspiration fans of Bleach could point out in Jujutsu Kaisen is some character designs and character archetypes. For example, many people see how similar Maki from Jujutsu Kaisen is to Lisa from Bleach.

And most recently, Gege himself came out and said one of his main characters is directly inspired by one of the most iconic Bleach characters.

Gege Reveals Megumi Is Inspired By a Bleach Character

Megumi’s Relationship With Tsumiki is Inspired By Rukia

Jujutsu Kaisen recently had an exhibition event that took place in Tokyo, and it included a Q&A from the creator where he answered quite a few interesting questions. One of these questions was about the inspirations behind the character of Megumi, one of the main characters of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Gege Akutami then revealed two characters Megumi is based on. The first one has nothing to do with Bleach, and is known as Megumi Wanibuchi.

"You've Done Enough. I Wanted To Create A World That Wouldn't Expose Tsumiki To Injustice And Unhappiness. And If I Couldn't Do That, Then At Least I Wanted To Preserve Our Fragile Lifestyle As Much As I Could While I Was Still Alive. I Wanted To Eat Food That I'm Used To Making And Gaze At The Laundry Hanging In The Sun And See Tsumiki Off As She Walked Side By Side With Someone Like You In The After-Noon Light. Then I'd Think About How Happy I Was" — Megumi Fushiguro

Gege also revealed that Megumi is based off of Rukia, a beloved character from Bleach. What Megumi takes from her isn’t her appearance or personality, even though they aren’t too different in that department, but rather her relationship with her brother. Megumi also has a sibling, Tsumiki Fushiguro, and her story is central to his character, just like in Rukia’s case with her brother. According to Gege, he drew inspiration from Rukia's bond with her sibling to write Megumi.
